SPRAGUE SHIELD MATCH. P.W.D. V. RAILWAYS. On Saturday teams representing the N.Z. Railways and Public Works Department will meet in the Sprague Charity Shield competition at the Paeroa Domain. The winners will play the Thames Valley Power Board team at Te Aroha. This shield, presented by Mr R. Sprague, of Te Aroha, came into play in 1926 for competition between public service bodies, with the proviso that the gate moneys should be devoted to charity among the needy of the people in the district in which a match was played. Thus Paeroa will benefit from Saturday’s match, and Te Aroha from the game between the winners and the Power Board. So those attending the match on Saturday will have the double satisfaction of witnessing a good game played between fresh blood and knowing that for every shilling paid in entrance money someone in need will gain. The P.W.D. team will be chosen from the following :— Pullar, Bennett, Gibson, Goonan, Tukukino, Mcßae, Moore, Ratliff, Fitch, McKee, Pearcey, Bullock, Wilton, Tohu, Pennell, Coromandel, Bean, Tomich, and Maxwell. PAEROA V. PLAINS. The Paeroa v. Hauraki Plains match which was set down to be played at Ngatea on Saturday has been cancelled, both unions agreeing that expenses would total more than any sum that might be realised in takings, as it is the dead end of the season. At last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union Committee it was decided to donate £.3 from the union’s funds to the Hauraki Plains Union to recompense it for - the cancellation of the match. PROMARY SCHOOLS MATCH. The Paeroa Primary School representatives were defeated by the Waihi fifteen at Waihi on Saturday afternoon by 16 points to 8. The teams were evenly matched, and the scores were no indication of the merits of the two teams. The Paeroa lads will now have to play off with the winners of the Waihi v. Piako match for the Fleming Shield.
