PAEROA BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. ROUTINE BUSINESS. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council on Thursday night the Mayor, Mr W. Marshall, presided over Crs. H. H. Bray, P. E. Brenan, E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt, H. J. Hare, H. M. Shand, J. W. Silcock, W. E. Ward, and Miss -'Butler, assistant town clerk.. Puke Road Drain. Mr G. S. Whiteside, Paeroa, wrote announcing that he had had the blackberries and hedge trimmings'lying opposite his property on Puke Road cleaned out, and also as much as possible of the rubbish in front of the next section towards the concrete culvert nearer the town. He asked that the council as soon as possible, as assured, get the drain cleaned out to its original depth, the obstruction being chiefly close to the culvert. Further, the writer pointed out the enormous waste of borough water that was taking place from the defective wooden watering trough a little west of the concrete culvert. This waste water was flooding and damaging the land in the vicinity. The writer drew the council’s attention to uncleared noxious weeds and blackberries near the concrete culvert in Puke Road and Flora Street. He suggested to the corporation that it clear the blackberries and charge the cost to the landowners responsible for the nuisance, and concluded his letter by remarking, “We who carry out our obligations, under gentle pressure, would like to see all treated alike.” The letter was received and the two matters referred to the foreman. White Lines v. Traffic Domes. The Auckland Automobile Association wrote suggesting that white lines should be substituted for traffic domes, as they had proved more satisfactory. The letter quoted the case of Margate, England, one of the most crowded seaside resorts, stating that since the introduction of white lines the town had been immune from road deaths. This was most satisfactory because Margate’s death roll was previously a very unhappy one. The Mayor was of opinion that the white lines were better than traffic, domes, only a permanent surface was necessary first. Ultimately, when Paeroa’s roads got the final seal on,, it would be advisable to adopt the system. It was decided to inform the association that the council would give its consideration to the subject, and when expedient would adopt the white lines system. Installation of Water. The district engineer, N.Z. Railways, Auckland, asked in connection •with the installation by the council of a fire hydrant and 2-inch main at the Paeroa railway settlement, that the council arrange to remove the hydrant and forward the account for the work carried out to him. It was agreed to receive, Or. Edwards remarking that they would nave money by leaving it there', and ;he Mayor' counter-stating that hydrants were worth money. Main Highways Funds. The A.A.A. announced that a meeting would be held in Auckland on September 13 to consider, if thought fit, the passing of a resolution to be forwarded to the Prime Minister protesting against the expressed intention of the Government to withhold from the funds of the' Main Highways Board this year the annual grant of £200,000' from the Public Works Fund and £35,000 from the Consolidated Fund. The letter asked that a representative might be present at the conference, or failing that a telegram of support be sent. " The letter was received. Letter of Thanks. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, thanked the council for its resolution, .passed in connection with the recent negotiations affecting relief of unemployment in Paeroa, and stated that it was .very pleasing to .learn that one’s efforts were appreciated. Transfer of Petrol Pumps. W. Perston asked for the transfer of petrol pumps lately licensed in the name of R. L. McClinchy to' his name. The application ..was granted, with the proviso, proposed by Cr. Brenan, that a third unused pump which applicant proposed to have removed later, should be covered by insurance against any risk while it remained there.
