THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which Is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1929. LOCAL AND GENERAL

During 1928 the number of deaths recorded in New Zealand was 11,811. Heart diseases, with 2315, accounted for most; cancer, with 1374, came second, and chest diseases third, with 1027. Deaths by violence, strange to say, occupied no less than fourth place, 956 people having died thus during the year. New Zealand still has the lowest death-rate in the world.

Probably as a result of the mail robbery’ at Netherton recently tentative alteration has been made in the arrangement for delivery of mails to Netherton on Saturday afternoons. Instead of the mails remaining at the offices mentioned until Monday morning they will remain in Paeroa, and be delivered on Monday mornings.

The following building permits, of a value of £286, have been granted since the last meeting of the Borough Council : Mr C. H. Pascoe, to make additions to house in Arney Street; Mrs M. Spinks, to carry out repairs to dwelling, Corbett Street; Mr A. Scott, to erect garage in Cullen Street for Mr N. C. Busby ; the Shell Company of N.Z., Ltd., to make addtions to garage, Coronation Street.

The return of traffic receipts for the year ended March 31 shows that out of Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Ngaruawahia, Morrinsville, Te Aroha, Paeroa, Waihi, and Thames boroughs, Hamilton collected most fees with £1525 15s, and Paeroa came second, with £348 4s 6d.

The Imperial, Canadian, and U.S.A. Trade Commissioners in New Zealand will probably be among those visiting Paeroa with the Auckland Chamber of Commerce train in November.

In the allocation of heavy traffic fees for the year ended March 31, the Paeroa Borough Council, from a total expenditure of £4792 18s 2d and £156 14s contributed to the pool, receives £42 Ils Bd. Ohinemuri County, from a total expenditure of £6911 19s 8d and £9 9s 9d contributed to the pool, receives £6l 8s 2d, while the figures for the Hauraki Plains County are £20,972 3s sd, £6l Is 7d, and £lB6 6s 6d respectively. Turua Town Board, which spent nothing on roads and received nothing by way of traffic fees, received nothing.
