“In my opinion,” said Mr Justice McCardie at the Birmingham Assizes, “the objects of punishment are five : (1) To deter the criminal himself from future crime; (2) to deter others from commission of offences ; (3) to secure for the public a period of protection from the offender ; (4) to reform so far as is possible the criminal ; and (5) to satisfy the demand of the people for punitive justice. It is, 1 think, well to remember these important matters when sentences are being criticised. Ido not overlook as 1 mention these five important matters the widely be.neficient operation of the principle of probation.”
P. C. Wren, author of “Beau Geste ” and other popular novels, is a great smoker. When hard at work on a masterpiece he will consume an ounce of tobacco a day. Strong stuff, too, and like most American brands, rank with nicotine. How does he do it ? It’s certainly risky. Many a man “ strong as a horse ” has had to abandon his pipe because he smoked the wrong tobacco, that is tobacco rich in nicotine. How comes it that the foreign tobaccos are like that ? Our New Zealand brands (grown and manufactured by the National Tobacco Co., Ltd., the pioneers of the N.Z. tobacco industry) contain so little nicotine that you may indulge as freely as you please with impunity. You see the leaf is toasted, which makes all the difference. These ’baccies don’t bite the tongue, and they burn to the last shred. Ask any tobacconist for “Riverhead Gold (mild and delicious), “Cavendish” (sporting mixture, medium), “Navy Cut No. 3” (a choice blend), and “Cut Plug No. 10” (rich, dark, and full-flavoured).*
