“In my opinion,” said Mr Justice McCardie at the Birmingham Assizes, “the objects of punishment are five : (1) To deter the criminal himself from future crime; (2) to deter others from commission of offences ; (3) to secure for the public a period of protection from the offender ; (4) to reform so far as is possible the criminal ; and (5) to satisfy the demand of the people for punitive justice. It is, 1 think, well to remember these important matters when sentences are being criticised. Ido not overlook as 1 mention these five important matters the widely be.neficient operation of the principle of probation.”

P. C. Wren, author of “Beau Geste ” and other popular novels, is a great smoker. When hard at work on a masterpiece he will consume an ounce of tobacco a day.
