PAEROA HOSPITAL.

QUESTION OF STAFFING.

SUGGESTIONS BY DEPARTMENT.

In connection with the question of the staffing of the Paeroa Hospital, Dr. T. H. Valintine, Director-General of Health, wrote in reply to the Thames Hospital Board’s request for guidance in the matter and suggested that the board should go slowly at first and await developments. In the meantime, he thought, it would be quite sufficient if the board appointed : (1) A sister-in-charge ; it would be necessary for the officer appointed to be a nurse as well as a midwife. It might be possible to obtain a suitable officer to take this position from the staff of the Thames Hospital, otherwise it would be as well to advertise the appointment, the salary to be from £l5O to £lBO per annum. (2) A cook-laundress, at a wage of £2 per week. (3) A handyman, to attend to fuel, boiler, garden, messages etc.

The Director-General thought that if a start was made on these modest lines it would be possible in emergency to supplement the staff by a nurse or midwife possibly from the maternity hospital at Thames. As the institution became popular the staff could be increased, and it might indeed be necessary to have, later on, a staff nurse to assist the matron, and a pupil maternity nurse. In regard to the furnishing, the list suggested seethed quite satisfactory. . The chairman mentioned that the reply had only recently been received, so as yet the secretary had not obtained the quotations for the furnishings.

Mr Brenan observed that it seemed all right. The people of Paeroa were preparing for the opening of the hospital.
