The fire loss in New Zealand last year was estimated at £1,636,118, or £1 2s 6d per head of population, according to the annual report of the Inspector of Fire Brigades just presented to Parliament.
A petition protesting against the the inclusion of the Waitakaruru and Pipiroa ridings in the Hauraki Plains abattoir area is in circulation and when presented to the county council will contain numerous signatures.
There will be no ladies’ hockey matches played at Paeroa to-morrow.
During 1928 the sum of £7,566,232 was spent by New Zealanders on intoxicating liquor, according to a pamphlet which has just been issued by the New Zealand Alliance. Mr F B. Adams, x of Dunedin, estimates the expenditure by the people of New Zealand last year on drink as follows: Spirits, £2,334,580 ; wines, £384,564 ; beer, imported, £59,523 ; beer, New Zealand, £4,787,565. Expenditure per head (including Maoris), £5 3s l id.
The following players have been selected to make the trip to Te Aroha to-morrow to represent the Hauraki Plains against Piako in the Poland Cup Rugby competition : Beasley, Blacklaws, Burt (2), Costello (2), P. Clark, Dimmock, Elvin (2), G. Hutchinson, Hedley, Madgwick, Masters, Marshall, Scott, and Wright. The junior team will play at Ngatea at 2.30 p.m., and the third-grade at 1.30.
As the result of play in the N.Z. ladies’ hockey championship tournament at Gisborne yesterday, Southland and Canterbury will meet in the final to-day. Miss A. O’Neil, of Paeroa j has been chosen as a member of the Pakeha team to play a Maori eleven to-day. No local players have been chosen to represent the North Island against the South.
The intensity of the gale which raged in Wellington at the beginning of the week may be gauged from the fact that several cyclists and pedestrians had to receive medical attention. One middle-aged woman was swept off her feet and fell heavily, and had to receive medical attention. An elderly man was taken to the hospital, having been blown over by the wind. A postman was riding a bicycle, when a gust blew him off his machine, medical attention being necessary, and a motor-cyclist had to be attended to at the hospital after being blown off his machine.
The matter of the aerial ropeway at Karangahake came up again at the Ohinemuri County Council meeting yesterday, when Cr. J. B. Morris reported further on the matter. He said the matter of purchase now rested with the Mines Department, from which no reply had as yet been received. It had been made quite clear at a meeting of the parties interested that the council would not purchase the ropeway, and that no indication of what the council would do in the matter had been stated, beyond that it would be given every consideration.
The will be no third-grade football match at Paeroa to-morrow. The Paeroa juniors to meet Waihi at Waihi in the Sharebrokers Cup will leave Thomas’ garage at 1.45 p.m.
