COUNTY WORKS.
ENGINEER’S .REPORT. The following report was submitted to the Ohinemuri County Council at its meeting yesterday by the acting engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw Paeroa Riding. “Ordinary maintenance has been carried out, Mill Road having received a good deal of metal. On account of the growth of gorse along this road it has been necessary to use the grader to remove the shoulders, and this work is proceeding. “On account of the local firm with whom was placed an order for timber for the re-decking of the Komata Reefs bridges not having supplied same to date, it will be necessary to procure the material elsewhere, as all the structures are in urgent need of attention. Karangahake Riding. “Usual maintenance has been carried out on all roads. Water mains have been giving trouble, and several lengths have had to be replaced. It will be necessary at an early date to have new caps placed on the trestles of the swing bridge across the Ohinemuri River opposite the Karangahake railway This work will necessitate the employing of special labour and gear. In the Waikino riding the swing bridge over the Waitekauri stream is requiring similar attention, and I would recommend that these repairs be done as soon as possible. Mangaiti Riding. “All roads and bridges have received attention. Patching metal is required for portions of the Old Te Aroha road. Waihi Riding. “Most of the time during the above period has been given to the WaihiTauranga main highway. Slight repairs have been made to the clay portions of Matangia and Waimata roads. Timber for repairs to the Willows bridge is required, this bridge giving access to two settlers, Messrs Leopold and Morton. Waitekauri Riding. “Ordinary maintenance has been carried out in this riding. The timber authorised for repairs to two bridges on the Golden Cross road and ordered on June 28 has not yet been delivered, and as both bridges are urgently needing repairs, I would suggest that the necessary material be procured elsewhere. Kaimanawa Riding. “All roads are in good order with the exception of Settlement Road. Repairs are now in hand on this length, an order having been placed with Mr M. C. Smith for the supply and delivery of 100 cubic yards of gravel. The Maratoto Mine road was closed for two days owing to floodwaters causing a large wooden culvert to collapse and allow the filling over it to be scoured for a length of 40ft. The repairs were carried out without any loss of time, a new 3ft concrete culvert being installed. “With reference to Mr J. Handley’s senr., application to have a drain along his boundary on the HikutaiaNetherton Ferry road, so as to carry off stormwater collecting at his gateway, I have to state that the work was put in hand and completed during the month Waikino* Riding. “All roads and footpaths have received attention. The Waitawheta road over Cox's, Hill during the earlier part of the month became in such a bad state that it .was necessary to concentrate all hands for some time on this particular 1 piece, so as to keep the road open. Main Highways.
"Hamilton-Paeroa.—A considerable amount of maintenance metal has been required, the carting being done by the council’s trucks, except when casual trucks were employed while the council’s trucks were laid up for repairs. The tractor and grader and roller have also been employed. “Paeroa-Kopu.—The supply and delivery of fine metal for this length let
to Mr H. A. Julian was started on the 19th of the month, and to date 270 chains have been completed. “Hikutaia-Netherton.—This length is in a much improved state since the building up with the creek gravel, but unfortunately if not covered with a carpet of fine metal it will not stand up to the traffic during the summer months, so I would ask the council to consider the requirements of this highway. “Waihi-Tauranga.—This length of 21 miles has been patched and graded ready to receive the fine metal recommended at a previous meeting.
Abattoir. “New doors are required on the slaughtering pen. Plant.
“It was necessary during the month to lay one of the trucks up for extensive repairs.”
