OVERSUBSCRIBED.

SOUTHERN CROSS FUND. The Southern Cross Rescue Fund was over-subscribed by more than £4OOO, says a Sydney newspaper. Onehalf of the subscriptions is to be returned to known subscribers. Donations received amounted to £7507. The payments under the charter account for the hire of the air liner Canberra amounted to £2050. Other expenses, including arrangements for local search of the Southern Cross, brought the total expenditure to date to £3lBO. The balance of the credit of the fund in the Commonwealth Bank is £4,333. The return of half the donations will amount to about £3,753, which will leave the fund in credit about £5BO. Of this amount £5OO is to be given as a grant to the crew of the Canberra in the following proportions : The pilot ( Captain Holden), £2OO ; the observer (Dr. Hamilton), £lOO ; the engineer (Mr Mitchell), £lOO ; and the wireless operator (Mr Stannage), £lOO. When the fund has been finally closed it is anticipated that there will by a balance of about £BO in hand. This is to be divided in equal proportions to the four recognised societies having annual street collections : The Hospital Saturday Fund, the Red Cross, Rose Day, and Poppy Day.
