A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

THE HAURAKI BODY. ' ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the annual report of the Hauraki Agricultural and Pastoral Association to be presented tonight at the annual meeting :— “In presenting the 31st annual report and balance-sheet of your association your committee has pleasure in stating that the operations of the association for the past year have been most successful from every point of view. “The annual Show, held on December 5, 1928.. was one of the most successful yet held by the association. The entries were good, and the quality of the stock and horses shown was equal to the best in New Zealand. In the cattle section the Jersey breed predominated, and that breed competed for the Captain A. C. Hubbard Memorial Cup, for which competition six groups (representing 24 cattle) were entered. Mr W H. Miers, of Rata'.una, was the successful exhibitor, his group being awarded first prize, and the exhibit of W. J. Hall and Son’s second place. The total entries in Jersey cattle was 104, which is a ■•■ecord for the Show.

"Competilion in the Friesian classes was also keen, the breed being represented by some exceptionally highclass cattle. The gold medal for the most points won in • the classes for that breed was secured by a young exhibitor. Mr W. McKee, of Turua. “Shorthorn and Ayrshire breeds were not strongly represented “One pleasing feature about the Shovz was the decided increase in exhibits of both sheep and pigs. The competition in the sheep classes promises to become greater each year. “In the horse classes good exhibits both numerically and in quality were received in thoroughbred and light horse classes. As in previous years, the association was given wonderful support by the Cambridge and Waikato exhibitors. This loyal and continued support is greatly appreciated by your committee. “The Dominion Hunter class—the big event of the Show—was won by Miss Lily Johnson’s Spark, and Mrs C. C. Merrin’s Two-step was declared the champion hurdler.

“There was a good array of sideshows and industrial exhibits on the ground and these assisted materially in making the Show a most successful event.

“From the financial viewpoint the association has had a good year, and the balance-sheet shows a credit balance on the year’s workings of £169 3s Bd. This is most gratifying, and has enabled the liability to the National Bank to be reduced to £369. The gate receipts were £73 6s 9d, and exceeded the previous year’s takings by several pounds. Members’ subscriptions were slightly lower than last year, but entrance fees received were £26 in advance of the previous year. The association is feeling the benefit of the lease of the saleyards, and the rent* received therefrom (£75 per annum) is a great help to our finances. The association will shortly be faced with a certaiq amount of additional capital expenditure on the yards. “Obituary.—The association desires to express its deep regret at the death of the late Mr W. J. Hall, who passed away during the year. Mr Hall was one of the original exhibitors of the association, and for years past was one of our keenest and biggest exhibitors. It is with deep regret that we record his death, and the sympathy of all the members of the association is extended to his widow and family. “In conclusion your committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the help and general working support accorded the association bv the stewards and other willing workers, especially the chief stewards— Messrs E. P. Fathers, D. Sheehan, D. G. McMillan, and A. J. Andrews—and also to all members and the business people of the district for their generous financial support. We also iesire to record our thanks to the “Jiauraki Plains Gazette” for the puhli'ity given to oui- activities, and to the Domain Board and its superintendent, Mr W. Hamilton, for their help and many considerations. The thanks <f the association are also due to Mr W. Bain for the free use of his meeting room for our meetings.”
