THE BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. PAST YEAR’S ACTIVITIES. Following is the annual report of the Paeroa Bowling Club, which is to be.presented at the annual meeting on Friday next, 30th inst.: — “Your Committee has pleasure in presenting the 25th annual report for your consideration. The past season was in many ways a most enjoyable one, and considerable interest was taken in club fixtures and night play. “Official Opening.—The season was opened on October 27 in good weather, many clubs in the Goldfields being represented. “Membership.—The membership now stands at 60, including honorary members. “Resignations.—Several members resigned during the season, principally due to the transfer of Public Works officials, amongst whom was the club’s auditor, Mr J. Wilkinson, and we wish to place on record our appreciation of the good services as auditor and committeeman rendered to the club by Mr Wilkinson. “Your committee regrets to announce that one .of our most enthusiastic members and vice-president, Mr T. H. Hale, will shortly leave the district. AIT members are aware of the good work done by Mr Hale, and also Mrs Hale, in the interests of bowlers, and we sincerely hope Mr and 'Mrs Hale and family will enjoy the best of health and prosperity in their future home. “Finance.—The Club’s finances ate sound, the year’s activities ending with a credit balance. “The Green.— During the past season the green has not been up to that standard of play enjoyed by other clubs in the district. A report, with recommendations for improvements, was received last August from Mr Dark, of Hamilton, and, after consultation with the Domain Board, it was decided to carry out Mr Dark’s suggestions. which entailed considerable work and expense. When completed, the green did not improve in play, and whether the improvements were carried out too late in the season, or not sufficient work put into tbe green during the year, is a divided opinion among the members. However, considerable dissatisfaction culminated in. a general meeting being called in April, the result of which it was decided to leave matters in abeyance until this year and in the meantime provide the caretaker (Mr Hamilton) with better tools. It is generally thought that the improvements done as recommended by Mr Dark will benefit the green considerably this season. “Inter-club Matches.—Six matches were played during the year, one against Waikino and one against Hikutaia,- both wins ; two played against Te Aroha, one against Waihi, and one against Thames were lost ' AH matches were most enjoyable, and it is sincerely hoped that many club matches will again be played this year. • . “Clothier Shield Competition.—This should have been held in Paeroa last season, but on account of our green not being ready for play on October 13 the Te Aroha club held’the competition on their green. Our thanks are due to the Te Aroha club for their kindly action. The shield was won by Mr Stewart’s team, from Matamata. “Goldfields Stars.—On Saturday, February 2. Messrs Mettam (skip), Brocket, Chamberlain, and Hale journeyed to Te Aroha to play for the stars, and their challenge was successful. On , February . 16 Morrinsville sent-? team to Paeroa, but it failed to lift the stars, but on March 2nd Matamata challenged Paeroa arid after a great game defeated our team. The dub’s congratulations are due to Mr Mettam and his team, who put up some good fights in honour of the club. “Fraser Stars.—Messrs Chamberlain arid Hi les challenged Thames and were successful. On February 23 Hikutaia challenged, and after a hard fought game Paeroa was defeated by a very small margin.. Congratulations are due to these gentlemen for their efforts on behalf of the club. “Goldfields Group Championship.— Mr T. L. Williams proved himself the champion in this tgroup, and in; the play-off at Hamilton for the South Auckland Championship was runnerup. The club congratulates Mr Williams on his fine performance, and we wish him further successes during his bowling* career. “Club Competitions.—The following were the winners of the various competitions : Brenan Shield, Messrs Innis, Carter, Lowry, and G. H Taylor (skip) ; A Grade Championship, Mr T. L. Williams; B Grade Championship, Mr Bomar ; Handicap Pairs, Messrs B».mar and Pascoe (skip). “Several ’holiday tournaments were held during the/season, and these created a good deal- of enjoyment. “Night Play.—Considerable interest was taken in night play, especially by the ladies. On many evenings the green was- fully occupied, and the pleasure given to all those participating in night play once more justifies the installing of riight-play facilities. The whole cost of light installation is now paid, and the club’s funds should continue to benefit from this source of revenue. “Club Pavilion. —Improvements are necessary, but. there does not appear to be any hope of creating a fund out of our present revenue. To build a fund for improvement purposes the committee is of the opinion that an annua! dance and euchre tournament could be held. Many ladies are now taking a keen interest in night play, and with their help it is thought the venture would be a financial success. “Official Closing.—This was held bn Saturday, May 11. The afternoon was spent in competitions, and the ladies kindly provided afternoon tea. An enjoyable day closed with mutual good wishes and hopes that all would pneet again on the opening day of the *1929-30 season. “Thanks.—The thanks of the club are due to the retiring president, who

donated a trophy ; to Mr Williams, winner of the Club Championship ; to the selector, Mr G. P. de Castro, for services rendered and faithfully carried out; and to those members who so willingly gave their time in the interests of the club generally Thanks are also due to the ladies who helped in dispensing hospitality when the club was entertaining visitors ; to all friends, both ladies and gentlemen, who supported the club by their active interest in night play; to the local Press for its support in so readily giving publicity to our activities, thus helping materially to benefit the club; to the Domain Board for its co-opera-tion ; to the caretaker, Mr Hamilton, for his efforts on our behalf during the season ; and to our energetic secretary, Mr Brockett, for his untiring efforts on behalf of the club. “In conclusion your committee sincerely trusts that the forthcoming season will be even more enjoyable and succesful than the past one has been. We hope that the great amount of work and expense your club was put to in levelling and top-dressing, as recommended by Mr Dark, of Hamil - ton, will result in a green second to none in the district this coming season. We trust that all members will extend to the new committee in its endeavours to work for the club’s prosperity the same whole-hearted support that has been accorded tn the present officers.”
