THE SPORTS QUEEN.

PRESENTATION TO MISS SHAND EVENING AT PARISH HALL. A delightful dance at the Anglican Parish Hal! on Friday night was given in honour of Miss V. Shand, the Sports Queen. This was the culminating event of the Sports Queen programme in the carnival, and the opportunity was taken to thank Miss Shand for acting so gracefully as Queen of Sport. Mr J. W. Silcock welcomed Miss Shand and remarked that it had been a great pleasure to raise money, and also a pleasure to work to place, Miss Shand at the top of the poll. They had not succeeded, and were naturally keenly disappointed ; but the margin of defeat, had been very narrow, and they could rest contented in the knowledge of the splendid work accomplished. It had been a great pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic committee. Mr Silcock congratulated Miss Shand on her hockey appointment, and on behalf of the sports committee and her supporters presented the guest of honour with a travelling case. Mr H. H. Priestley, the honorary secretary, expressed gratification at the support given to their queen, and remarked what a pleasure it had been to work in her interests. Mr H. M. Shand suitably replied on behalf of his daughter, whereupon three hearty cheers were given for Miss Shand, followed by the singing of "For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Dancing to the music of the Sports Five Band continued until nearly midnight, the hail being just comfortably filled.

A dainty supper was provided by the ladies attending.
