THE HAURAKI REGIMENT.

Staff-Sergeant Steward, of Paeroa, and Corporal P. Brant, of Thames, both of the N.Z.P.S., took their pro motion examinations at Auckland on August 14 to 16, passing in practical. Results of the written portion wi 1 not be to hand for some weeks. Appointments. H. H. Sterling has been appointed Director of Railways and granted the honorary rank cf colonel. Second-Lieutenant J. A. Speer, from the North Auckland Regiment, is to be 2nd-lieutenant of the HaurAki Regiment, with seniority as from November 30, 1927, and posted to the Ist battalion. Camp Attendance. The percentages of attendances at annual camps last year show that the Hauraki Regiment took 97 per cent, of its strength into camp, a percentage which, although equalled by two or three other units, was not bettered in New Zealand. Officers’ Course. The course for senior officers of the Territorial Force consisting entirely of tactical exercises without troops, is now being held at Cambridge. Lieut.-Cclonel J. E. Duigan, D.S.O. Chief Staff Officer, Northern Command, is in charge of the course, assisted by other staff officers drawn from the command. The officer commanding the Hauraki Regiment, Lieut.-Colonel F. Prideaux, together with other senior officers of the regiment, is attending. Commission Examination. All caniddates of No. 2 Regimental Area sitting for first appointment examination to commissioned rank in September are required this year to attend a course prior to the actual examination. The course will take place at the Waikato Camp, Ngaruawahia, from September 4 to 10, with the examination immediately afterwards. Exchange Officers. There are at present three officers of the N.Z.S.C. doing duty with Imperial Regiments In India in exchange for three officers of the Imperial Army in India who are now serving in New Zealand. With the return of these three officers to New Zealand all the young officers of the N.Z.S.C. will have had experience and seen service overseas, either during the war, or by attachments subsequently. }
