THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 1929. THE QUEEN CARNIVAL.

What His Worship the Mayor, of Paeroa described, when he declaredthe final figures of the: .Queen; Carni;val,:;.as the proudest moment of his seven years in office must also have been a moment of intense justifiable’ pride to all those who so unselfishly aided in the*affair. The result beggared, all expectations. At the outset of’k.the proposal a mere £450 was .doubtfully .suggested as the maximum to be expected in times which are undoubtedly none too good for anyone. The £450 objective was changed to £B5O, as the former figure would npt have made it possible., to adequately; cope with the work Which had been carefully, thought out and carefully .planned so that > practically all the money could be retained in Paeroa by payment to local men in alleviate linemployment. The very extent of unemployment extant made it necessary to extend the scope of operations.’ That naturally necessitated the raising of a larger sum to carry the proposals into operation and completion. The Government subsidy for unemployment uses fakes' into consideration only actual labour costs, so that the projects in view., had to be such as to employ the maximum of. labour with the least possible expenditure of money on materials. A.nd on Saturday night the proud moment arrived when Paeroa was told that the total sum expected had been exceeded by no - less, than, £710;-»; A wonderful record indeed; and one undoubtedly, to be proud of. The people of Paeroa and district are to be unreservedly, congratulated on their splendid response to a most worthy scheme. v ßy their untiring efforts and sacrifices many little homes iri Paeroa that would have suffered dire distress* this- winter will see the sun shining through their windows, and in doing so will remember gratefully the efforts of their friends in better circumstanctjs. Tn many cases—and one can only w’ish from the bottom of one’s heart, in every case—this tiding over the winter will mean ultimate continual prosperity and no future worries as to employment. VThe work planned, too, is a kind that will make for pride of accomplishment in everyone participating in it. The men to whom the money will give employment can look back in future years with glowing, satisfaction to Plunket and rest rooms, beautiful hospital grounds, a cenotaph, and improved roads as a result Of their labour, and the people who contributed so generously to the funds will be rewarded by these ■ concrete results .as well as the thought that through their efforts many of their townspeople had been carried’through what must otherwise have been a period of distressing strain.
