CARNIVAL FUNCTIONS.

DANCE AT NETHERTON. The long line of cars standing outside the Nethe’-ton Hall on Thursday night was a sure indication that the dance and euchre tournament in aid of the Farmers’ Queen was well patronised. The hall was well filled with dancers, and the euchre tables attracted a large number. Early in the evening a special fancy cap dance was put on, and the judges had a most diftask to decide which pair wore the most gaily-decorated headgear. The paper caps were all very well and prettily made. The award for the most becoming pair of caps went to Mrs Tyson and Mr Steedman. Before supper a very pleasing ceremony took place in the presentation to the Queen candidate, Miss Helen Matthews, of a beautiful floral tribute in the form of a horseshoe artistically composed of fresh flowers in red—the Queen’s colour This was the gift of Miss Muriel R6ss, Auckland, sister of Mrs Bert. Andrews, Netherton who made the presentation. The Mapor of Paeroa, Mr W. Marshall, introduced the matter in an excellently worded eulogy of the Queen candidate. He said there were many beautiful sentiments expressed in words, of which he thought there were none more appropriate than the phrase “Say it with flowers,” and that was the sentiment it was desired to express on this occasion. As Mrs Andrews presented the bouquet Mr Marshall wished Miss Matthews “Good Luck.”

Miss Matthews also received a handsome box of chocolates, at the hands of little Miss Sanderson, the gift of Mrs B. Whisker, and the hearty rendering of “For she’s a jelly good fellow” testified to the popularity of thie Farmers’ Queen. The euchre prizes were won as follows : Ladies, Mrs J. White, 1 ; Miss V. Heanpey. 2 ; Mrs J. Harms. 3. Men, Mr I. Fisher, 11 Mr C. Stembridge, 2; Mr R H. Ileappey, 3. The balloon dance resulted ih a win for Miss Jean Vowles and her partner. Mr L. Potter, but as Mjss Vowles was the donor of the prize she handed it on to Miss Argali, the runner-up. Other competitions and their winners were : Doll (Dorothy). Mr L. Potter : dinner, Mrs J. Morrison ; oysters, Mr W. J. Matthews ; bobs outfit, Mr B. E. Veale. The funds were considerably augmente 1 by the skilful auctioning by Mr D. G. McMillan of some of the cakes and sweets.

Prior to the close Mr H. J. Hare, the organiser of the Queen committee. thanked the people for attending, and particularly thanked the Netherton commitee for their efforts in making the event such an outstanding success, and praised the excellent music supplied by the Netherton Jazz Orchestra, lead by Mrs Scudamore, and their generosity in playing so consistently, as they had done, free of ■harge. to help the good work.

SOCIAL AT PAEROA. On Friday night the final social of the Carnival season took place when a plain and fancy dress dance and euchre tournament was held in the daiety Theatre under the auspices cf the Sports Queen. ' Quite a number of dancers took the floor to the music of the Sports Five Band, although not many were in fancy dress. Paucity of numbers, however, was more than offset by the greatly appreciated extra room to dance round in. While good, the fancy dresses did not call for the amount of praise justly due to the children at their ball last week. The euchre tournament was very well patronised, the stage, being occupied to capacity, and some very keen play took place. The Mayor, Mr W. Marshall, in the course of a speech thanked the people of Paeroa and the surrounding district for the great work and splendid support of the movement. Special praise and thanks were due to the ladies for their indefatigable work. Mrs J. W. Silcock presented the Sports Queen, Miss V. Shand, with a beautiful bouquet, and Mr Silcock presented the prizes to the darce and euchre winners. Mr Silcock welcomed the Farmers’ Queen, Miss H. Matthews, to the dance and expressed his good wishes to her. He hoped that the following night the people of Paeroa would enable Mr H. M. Shand to crown his daughter Carnival Queen. The speaker made special reference .to the support given by Karangahake, and thanked the Sports Five Band for their voluntary services and excellent playing.
