ACCIDENT TO CAR.

STEERING GEAR FAILS. OCCUPANTS SHAKEN. At 9.15 yesterday morning, while on the way to Wharepoa in his car, Mr E. N. Le Petitt, of that school, accompanied by two othei’ teachers, Misses J. Barwell and M. Leece, of the Hikutaia school, was proceeding down an incline known as Wight’s Bend, near where the Komata Road branches off, when the steering gear failed. Out of control, the car swerved to the right, just missing a power pole and failing into the adjacent ditch. All the occupants were severely shaken, although, fortunately, not seriously injured. The two ladies received cuts about the face, and the driver sustained a nasty smack on the forehead. The party were taken to Mr Walter Wight’s nearby farm, and all possible assistance was given by Mr and Mrs Wight. The two ladies were subsequently brought back to Paeroa by Mr L. F. Jones, but Mr Le Petitt remained behind to assist in getting his car out. Both schools were closed for the day.
