ENGINEER’S .REPORT. OPERATIONS DURING JULY. The following report was submitted to the Ohinemuri County Council at its meeting yesterday by the acting engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw :— Paeroa Riding. “The metalling of Rotokohu Road was continued, but on account of the specified size of the metal not being maintained by the quarry company the work has been delayed until such time as the company can supply suitable material. The lower end, of the Rotokohu Road drain has been cleaned, as authorised at last meeting. Road has been patched. Two settlers have been employed on the Komata Reefs road cleaning watertables and opening up culverts, and 75 cubic yards of hand-broken metal stacked on the sides of this road has been crushed arid placed on the roughest portions of the road surface. Karangahake Riding. “The widening of the cutting on Rahu Road at Docherty’s Creek has been completed, and ordinary maintenance has been carried out on other roads. Repairs have also been made to the Mackaytown swing bridge over the Ohinemuri River. Mangaiti Riding. “Usual maintenance has been carried out in this riding,, the workmen giving their time chiefly to work on the majn highway. Waiht Riding. “Very little work other than repairs to the Waihi-Tauranga main highway has been gone on with, with the exception of Ford Road, which has been patched, and a washout on Matangia Road, which has been repaired. Waitekauri Riding. “The road between Chappell’s Crossing and Waitekauri has been patched. On the Golden Cross road a culvert has been replaced, and the creek' crossing has had a new stone crate placed in position. Timber for repairs to bridges has not yet come to hand. Kaimanawa Riding. “The gravelling of all roads in this v area has been completed during the month and are now all in good order, with - the exception of Settlement Road, which is suffering considerable damage owing to the heavy carting to the Ohinemuri Mines. Waikino Riding. “The surfacemen in this riding have been employed on the Waitawheta road, repairing the worst places only. A ; truck has been engaged to cart metal for this purpose. The road is now passable, but should the present weathei ; conditions continue the Waitawheta ■ settlers are going to have great difficulty in getting to and from their farms. Main Highways. “All main roads have been receiving, attention, and on account of the continued rain and increasing traffic maintenance costs are becoming very high. t Government Grants. : “The contract for metalling portion of the Maratoto Mine road was completed during the month, and the claim has been sent forward to tl.e Public Works Department fo.r payment of the grant. The work has been inspected by the Public Works Department’s inspector.” While expressing satisfaction with 'the work done in the Paeroa riding, Or. Johnstone asked whether Mill Road could receive at anyrate tem.pirary repairs. ' The acting-engineer, in answer, said the 'difficulty was in securing proper metgi, the Tirohia quarry at present •being occupied crushing for Matamata County. ' To another question by Cr. Johnzs'tqrie Mr Shaw said it would be a good idea to repair portions of the road with local stone as a temporary measure. ■ ‘ It was arranged that the chairman and Cr. Johnstone inspect the road in question to see what work was necessary.
