RAILWAY REPAIRS.
CLAIMS OF THAMES. MR?SAMUEL still fighting. In the House last week Mr A. M. Samuel referred back to the question which he had previously addressed to the Minister of .Railways with reference to the repair of locomotives, which repair work in the past had been carried out by Messrs A. and G. Price, of Thames. He said he was extremely disappointed, at the reply of the Minister, who must realise that it was economically unsound for skilled workers to be thrown into the ranks of the unemployed through the action of the Government when they had no chance of being re-employed. The foundry at Thames had turned out splendid engines in the past, every one of them having given entire satisfaction. He understood that there were many engines in the Government workshops which could not possibly be repaired in time for the Christmas trade, and it would be sound business policy to give Messrs A. and G. Price a share of the work which they asked, so as to keep their employees in situation. However, said Mi’ Samuel, in the near future he would have another opportunity of dealing with this subject in its relationship to the unemployment problem, when he would take the opportunity of ventilating the grievance of Messrs A. and G. Price and their staff.
