(From the “Ohinemuri Gazette” of July 22, 1893.) FOOTBALL. New Zealand Footballers. Regarding the late big licking received by our boys “Gumsucker, in the “Australian Star,” writes “ ‘How have the mighty fallen’ was the cry on Saturday evening after the crushing defeat of the New Zealanders by the New South Welshmen. Without wishing for one moment to detract from the merits of the win, I can only say that the New Zealanders played a poor game, and it was evident, after the first ten minutes, that they were sadly out of form. It appears to me that either the New South Wales Rugby Union or the management of_ the New Zealand has expected far too much from this team. They arrived at 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday ; played a very rough game at Parramatta the same afternoon ; Saturday, met the New South Wales representatives ; Tuesday, defeated 18 juniors ; Thursday they were to be seen at Newcastle, and on Saturday again met a fine, fresh, representative team, the majority of whom did not turn up on the Wednesday afternoon for practice, as ordered •by their union, so as to be fit and well. Fancy five hard matches in 11 days, and these on grounds as hard and and dry 1 as rock, while in their own country they are used to soft grounds. Is it to be wondered that they were more dead than alive on Saturday, and consequently did not show any dash and spirit ? The New South Wales men played a grand winning game, but their weight in the forward division won the match, as their nine forwards must have averaged a stone heavier than the Maoris, and they certainly made full use of it. With a good rest, and a fine day, the Maoris would, I feel confident, again demonstrate that they are ‘Ake ake, kia kaha.’ Perhaps another match could be arranged before they go : if so it would be a big draw, and the proceeds could be devoted to our charities.” .
Paeroa v. Te Aroha.
The following teams will represent Paeroa and Te Aroha at the football match to be played here to-day :— Te Aroha.—Full-back, Percival; three-quarters, Ryan, Ellis, Pavitt; half-backs, Maingay, Lavery, Lipsey ; forwards, W. Biggs (capt.), Lipsey, Lavery, Mdogan, Sage, Caverhill, Randall, McLean. Paeroa. — Full-back, McGuire ; three-quarters, Dickson, McLean, Johnstone (capt.) ; half-backs, Cock, Coote, Quinn; forwards, Stewart, Grant, Jones, Hubbard, Moore, McGuire, Johns, McGruer. MINING. Amongst the passengers who left Auckland for Sydney by the s.s. Waihora on Tuesday evening was Mr J. W Walker, the well-known mine manager and owner,, who is en route to London. His mission to London is for the purpose of floating certain mining properties which require capital for their development, and he is arm nd with all the plans; reports, etc., necessary for his purpose. It will be recollected that some years age Mr Walker was successful in floating in London the Waihi Gold Mining Co., now one of the best mining properties on the Thames peninsula. His present mission is to float adjacent properties on the line of the Great Martha reef—the mainstay of the Waihi Co.—namely, two properties, one at feach end and on the same line of reef. One of these is the Waitete of 90 acres, and the other is Walker’s leases —three adjoining sections of 30 acres each—-on the other end. He has also in hand the necessary authority for dealing with the Grand Junction mine (Ohinemuri), Sylvia and Monowai (Thames), and the Gem (Waiomo Creek) about nine miles north of Gra r hamstown). Mr Walker’s case against Mr Russell, of Auckland, for £415, has been settled out of Court.
