PAEROA RUGBY UNION. WEEKLY 'MEETING. The regular meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union management committee was held on Monday night, Mr J. Crosby, chairman, presiding over Messrs J. C. H. McDonald, W. Neil, H. Robinson, E. L. Shaw, J. Walmsley, and W. A. Fathers, secretary. It was agreed to pay the affiliation fee of £1 Is to the Thames Valley Referees’ Association. A resolution was passed regretting the departure from the district of Mr S. Kerr, and that his voluntary help with his secretarial duties had been much appreciated. ; The registration of M. and T. Bovell for Pirates was approved, and that of J. Catlin for East was approved suh- . ect to his clearance from the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union. / The replay between Suburbs and East, which was to have eventuated last Saturday, was awarded to Suburbs through the non-appearance of , East. ' It was decided to leave in the hands of Mr J. Walmsley and the secretary the matter of dates available for matches with Thames for the Birch Cdp. The application of the Thames Valley Railway Football Club to play ' Pirates for the Sprague Shield was held over until, the next meeting. In answer to a request that Paeroe players participate in a Te Aroha tournament, the secretary was instructed to write stating that unfortunately arrangements for the union’s fixtures for each Saturday had been made. , The Maori representative team as submitted was approved. , The entertainment of the Piako juniors was decided upon in return for th?ir union’s hospitality. The /ixmg of the third grade match for Saturday next was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. Owing to the proximity of the departure of Mr W. J. Pratley from the district the secretary was instructed to write to the Pirates club to appoint another delegate, and to than!. i Mr Pratley for his services to the union. Mr J. M. Fox was appointed delegate for Suburbs to fill the vacancy on the committee. The primary spools were granted permission to use No. 2 ground on. Saturday next. Mr McDonald was appointed manager of the senior representative - team to travel to Te Aroha, and Mr Walmsley was appointed to take charge of the juniors at Paeroa. . Messrs J. Crosby and W. Fathers were appointed voluntary gatekeepers for Saturday. • Matters for Thames Valley Meeting. Recommendations were passed that the union delegates to the Thames Valley Rugby Union state that owing to stringency of funds the Paeroa Union would not be able to commit itself to more than 10 per cent, of gate money, and that the draw for the McClean Cup be taken at the Thames Valley Union meeting on Saturday next ROLLER MILLS SHIELD. QUESTION OF BILLETING BOYS. A meeting of the management committee of the Thames Valley Primary Schools’ Rugby Union, with Mr E. Turner presiding, was held on Saturday morning to discuss the question of the holding of the Roller Mills Shield competition.. Delegates were present from Waihi, Piako, Hauraki Plains, and Paeroa. At the outset the Waihi ad Piako delegates made it clear that their unions-were not able to undertake a

section of the competition as they did last year, owing chiefly to the difficulty in obtaining billeting for the boys. The Hauraki Plains district was too scattered to consider undertaking a section there. The position in Paeroa was that circulars had been sent out asking for offers for billets, and out of a hundred families asked to date, only twenty had agreed to billet about 30 boys. The position seemed hopeless, and it was decided to inform the Auckland Schools’ Union that the Thames Valley Schools’ Union would be unable to stage the competition. The position now is that the matter is referred to the executive of the Auckland Schools’ Union, which body is the trustees of the shield and has the powei - to either stage the competition itself or ask another union to stage it, PLAINS RUGBY UNION. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Hauraki Plains Rugby Union met at Ngatea on Monday evening. Mr H. Dent presiding over Messrs C. S. Foster, C. A. Hayward, C. Bertelsen, N. Clay, C. Clarke, and W. Wylde (secretary). New Rules. The secretary of the Thames Valley Rugby Union wrote advising that the president, Mr J. W. Silcock, had perused the feet of rules submitted by the union and bad agreed to them. He had offered the suggestion that junior clubs should be allowed to affiliate, and had expressed the view that it was rathe', drastic to award a match against a team not on the field ready to commence playing at 2.45 p.m., and had suggested a fine for lateness and the awarding of the match after a lapse of 15 minutes’ grace. Mr Silcock congratulated the union on its rales, and endorsed them if it was not thought desirable to embody his suggestions. Members expressed the opinion that it would be advisable to leave the rule providing that a club should not be granted affiliation unless it had a senior grade team, as otherwise abuses were liable to creep jn. There was nothing to prevent a club having two or more junior teams, and a dis-' trict having sufficient juniors to form a team could join an affiliated club. In regard to the time of commencing matches, members agreed that 2.45 p.m. was quite late enough. Matches should start at 2.30 p.m., and by stipulating 2.45 p.m. the rale was allowing fifteen minutes’ grace. On the motion of Mr Clay, seconded by Mr Foster, the rales were confirmed, and it was decided that a copy be sent to each affiliated club. The question of printing the rules was deferred until the financial position improved. Centralising Matches. Arising out of a discussion on general football matters Mr Hayward (Waitakaruru) aivanced the suggestion that it would be for the good of football if all matches were played on one central, ground. He was of the opinion that next year there should be only four clubs on the Plains, and tr.et if a suitable ground could be secut"d all matches should be played at Ngatea. He argued that of recent years transportation methods had changed, and that the union should advance with the times. At present each district had its own playing field, on which it spent a great deal of money each year and only got three or four matches. The money was wasted, and a much smaller sum would suffice to maintain a really good field in a central location. Trans portation was a small item nowadays, when people got in a car to go a few hundred yards, for it would be just as easy for them to travel to the central field, where they could be assured of games to witness. The control of games, care of fields, comfort of patrons, entertainment of visitors, would all be simplified and done at considerably less cost, while the matches would attract such gates that the union would quickly be on a sound financial basis and be able to branch out where it was Sow restricted. He had been thinking of the matter for a long time, and could not find any serious objection to the proposal ; but on the other hand it had very much to comment it. Mr Dent mentioned that there was a movement afoot in Ngatea to secure an area of land for recreation purposes. ■ Mr Clay, Kerepeehi, was fully in accord with the idea. Mr Hayward said that he would bring the matter up for discussion at a later meeting, but after the merits of the scheme had been discussed awtele he moved and Mr Clay seconded, “That this union favourably consider the advisability of playing all its competition matches on a central ground.” This was carried. Appreciation of Hospitality. The Paeroa Rugby Union wrote convening its appreciation of the hospitality extended to its junior representatives at Ngatea on June 29. On the motion of Mr Bertelsen, seconded by Mr Foster, the secretary was instructed to write to the Paeroa, Piako, and Thames unions thanking them for the hospitality extended t > the Plains representative teams. Third Grade Match. The Waihi Rugby Union wrote asking for a third-grade match at Ngatea on Saturday next. It was agreed to accept, and the secretary’ was instructed to endeavour to arrange the match by telegraph. Primary Schools Matches. Mr R. C. Abel, secretary of the Hauraki Plains Primary Schools Rugby Union, wrote thanking the union for its very practical assistance towards the cost of travelling for the Fleming Shield matches. It was such assistance that encouraged the fostering of football among the small boys, and the Plains Union would find that such grants were a profitable investment. Insurance Fund. The payment of eleven claims on the union’s insurance fund were considered, and the payment of nine of them was authorised. Two claimants forfeited their claims by playing

while under the. doctor’s care. The claims totalled £32 lls-,3d.

Refereeing.

Mr Bertelsen, manager of the junior representative team, reported that when -his team took the field at Te Aroha on July 13 the referee was not in a fit state to control the match. The delegates were instructed to report the matter to the Thames Valley Rugby Union at its meeting on Saturday evening next. Match for Maramarua. The Waitakaruru Club’s junior team was instructed to play Maramarua at Waitakaruru on August 3. THAMES VALLEY REFEREES. LAST SATURDAY’S MEETING. A meeting of the Thames Valley Referees’ Association was held on Saturday evening last, when Mr'E. Smith (Paeroa), chairman, presided over the following : Messrs T. W. Jonas, B. Neil, and E. L. Shaw, Paeroa ; T. Atkins, W. Brydon, Smith, Voisey, and Tomich, Piako ; W. Carnachan, C. Dawson, W. Dunstan, A. Walsh, and J. Manpix (secretary), Waihi. The new constitution compiled by Mr W. Brydon was fully discussed and then adopted. The annual subscription of each affiliated association to the parent association was fixed at £1 Is. The appointment board set up to select referees for Poland Cup fixtures for this season, to take effect after the first round, comprised Messrs W. Brydon and E. Smith, together with one member’ of the Thames Valley Rugby Union management commitcee to be nominated by that committee. , The selectors wer? asked to select two referees and submit their names to the Morrinsville Association for Peace Cup fixtures. Mr H. M. Shand, delegate to the Thames Valley Rugby Uion, was empowered to ask that body to grant complimentary tickets for representative matches to Thames Valley referees. The secretary reported that he had written to the Hauraki Plains Association but had received no reply. He would, however, endeavour to got in touch with it through its representative at Waihi on the 27th inst. The throw into touch rule was discussed, and a question was sent on to the N.Z. Referees’ Association for an answer. , A general discussion on the laws and rules of the game took place. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr Brydon in his recent sad bereavement, the members standing. The next meeting was set down for 8 p.m. on the 27th inst. at Paeroa. HAURAKI PLAINS REFEREES. MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. The Hauraki Plains Referees’ Association met at Ngatea on Monday evening and appointed Messrs C. Stretton and A. Cleave as delegates to the Thames Valley Referees’ Association meeting at Paeroa on Saturday evening, with instructions to endeavour to get some of the Poland Cup matches allotted to Plains referees. Mr C. Stretton was appointed to control the Waihi-Piains junior match at Ngatea on Saturday next, and Mr A. Cleave the Waihi-Plains thirdgrade match if it eventuated. Mr L. Berney will be available if required for the Waihi-Piains school mutch at Kerepeehi. It was decided to write to ail orjspective referees and ask them to attend a meeting at Ngatea next Monday evening, when an effort would be made to put the association on a prosper basis.
