There’s no satisfactory substitute for tobacco. Many have been tried, —and found wanting. The best kown of these is the stuff calied “herb tobacco,” which is about as much like the real thing as hop-beer is like champagne. Even the genuine foreign tobaccos vary enormously in quality. But they possess one glaring defect in common—they are all more or less full of nicotine,’ and smokers cannot absorb a poison like that into the system continuously without paying the penalty sooner or later. The purest tobaccos' of all are those grown in New Zealand and manufactured by the National Tobacco Co., Ltd. (the pioneers of the tobacco industry in the Dominion). These are the only toasted brands procurable, and this process eliminates the nicotine and renders the tobacco safe to smoke. The toasting also develops flavour and fragrance. Ask any tobacconist for Navy Cut (a choice blend of medium strength), Cavendish (the famous snorting mixture), Riverhead Gold (a delicious aromatic) or Cut Plug No. 10 (rich, dark, and full flavoured).*
