FIRE AT PAEROA.
DWELLING TOTAL LOSS. OUTSIDE BOROUGH. At 1.45 on Sunday morning the fire brigade was called out to a lire near the cemetery and well outside the borough boundary.
On arrival it was found to be an old house opposite Mr C. B. Gentil’s owned by Mr J. Montague, of Thames; and leased by Mrs M. H. Pitkethley and until Saturday occupied by Mr A. Sardclich. The flames had a fatal hold on the building, and the biigade was powerless to do anything as there were no fire-plugs anywhere in the vicinity. The house stood some three chains from the road. In a very short space of time the structure was burnt to the ground, nothing being saved. The furniture, which belonged to ' Mrs Pitkethley, and consisted in part of some treasured family heirlooms, was uninsured. A new uninsured separator belonging to her was also lost.
How the fire started is a mystery, the last occupier, Mr Sardelieh, having vacated the place sometime or. Saturday afternoon. When Mrs Pitkethiey's son-in-law, Mr W. J. Pope, went out to milk the cows on Saturday morning Mr Sardelich was still there, but at the time of the afternoon milking the place was vacant, so Mr Pope made a thorough tour of inspection of all the rooms. There was no sign of fire or smell of fire at that time. The ; back door, ; however, was seen to be badly battered and the verandah considerably damaged.
