CRITICISM OF PLAYERS.

(By “Onlooker.”)

A good game was witnessed in Paeroa last Saturday between Plains and Paeroa. Plains had the better of the first quarter, but good defensive play by the Paeroa back division kept the fast Plains forwards in check.

The Plains half-back, Marshall, played a good game, and went down to the Paeroa rushes in good style. Costello and Fisher were the pick of the Plains forwards, but tired before the end of the game. Wright played a very safe game at fiveeighths, and did a lot of useful work for the Plains. Hedley is a fine stamp of player, and should develop into a first-class full-back. This team after a few games will take a lot of beating.

The Paeroa players were very slow in finding their feet, but played very well for the first time. Vedder played another fine game and combined splendidly with Fitch. Henderson -was inclined to hang in the backs too much, but gave a good exhibition of tackling. The forwards were not too good in the line-outs, but with practice that should be easily overcome. Taylor played a good game, but is not a very good rover. He is better in the line-outs. Johnson played his best game this season, being in the ruck all the time. Murray played a fair game in the first half, but was a passenger in the second. Killgout played a honest game, and should find a place in the Thames Valley team. Page needs to keep his forwards together more ; this player will make a good leader. Moore was the outstanding player on the field, and did more than his share. He opened up the game nicely for the rest of his backs. McGarvey played a fair game, but Swann did not combine too well; he may improve with a game or two. His passing was poor, but should be easily rectified. He kicked a nice goal and made a good attempt at another one, the ball striking the crossbar. The three-quarters all played well. Bax made a good centre, and kicks with good judgment. Rare played a safe game, but still needs to practice with his line-kicking. McNeil was tackling well and scored a nice try. McCollum and Bax combined in nice passing movements, and the try McCollum scored was well earned.
