FARMERS’ QUEEN.

DANCE AT NETHERTON.

ENJOYABLE EVENING. A very successful social and euchre tournament was'held in the Netherton Hall in aid of the Farmers’ Queen funds. The Queen candidate, Miss Helen Matthews, was present. Mr C. N. O’Neill, secretary of the controlling committee, formally opened the proceedings, and on behalf of the large, number of visitors from Paeroa expressed pleasure at being able to attend.

The Masters of Ceremony, Messrs R. Morrison and A. Mills, discharged their duties in such an efficient manner that there was not a dull moment from start to finish. The delightful music of Mrs Scudamore’s orchestra, given free, contributed largely to the gaiety of the occasion, and the carnival effect was completed by the d duty dresses of the ladies in harmony with the tasteful decorations.

After an enjoyable supper th? Mayor of Paeroa, Mr W. Marshall, prior to presenting the prizes, congratulated the promoters on the success of their function and referred to the deserving object—the relief of unemployment—for which the carnival had been launched.

The prize-winners were : Monte Carlo Waltz, Miss V. Charlesworth and Mr B. Sharpe ; Waltzing Competition, Miss C. Fleming and Mr R. Morrison 1, Miss P. Swift and Mr L. McDonald 2. Euchre : Ladies, Mrs W. Harold 1, Mrs Johnson, senr., 2 ; men, Mr G. H. Vowles 1, Mr J. Vercoe 2. Mi - Vowles having handed in his prize (a gold-mounted pen and pencil in case), this was auctioned for the benefit of the funds.

An elocutionary item by Mr Shakeshaft, of Hamilton, was much appreciated. .

Mr A. Mills, on behalf of the Netherton committee, thanked all those who had attended and made the event the success it was. The young people then again set about the more serious business of dancing, which was carried on into the early hours of the morning.
