■ c SOME STATISTICS. As public attention is now directed to that part of the South Island that has been subjected to earthquake damage, the following figures will be appreciated. Taking the population of the affected counties first, Murchison County has 1395 inhabitants ; Buller County, 10,305 ; Takaka County, 1950 ; Inauguhua County, 3530 ; Grey County, 14,150 ; giving a grand total of 31,330 persons in the most severely stricken areas. The population of the towns is as follows : Westport, 3890 ; Greymouth. 5800 ; Cobden, 1160 ; Brunner, 640 ; Hokitika, 2430. The townships of Murchison and Lyall are not given in the list in the Year Book owing to the smallness of their population.
