SHEEP IN DOMINION.

o MAJORITY IN NORTH ISLAND. DECREASE IN EXPORT. The Government interim return of sheep in the Dominion on April 30 shows 2,704,188 in the Auckland district, an increase over the final return of 1028; Gisborne (Hawke’s Bay), 0,797,342, an increase of 258.163 ; and Wellington, 6,067,679, an increase of 606,228. The North Island total is thus 15,569,209, an increase of 1,087,104. The South Island figures for the same date are 13,442,328, an increase of 790,533. This gives the North Island a majority of 2,126,971 in 1929, as against a majority of 1,830,400 in 1928, making an advance for the North Island over the South of 296,571 in a year, which shows that are increasing more rapidly in this island. The Dominion totals are 29,011,447 for 1929, and 27,133,810 for 1928, an increase of 1,877,637. This interim report shows, however, a reduction throughout in mutton exported. Last year 2,244,909 carcases of mutton were exported, and 1,922,242 in 1929, a decrease of 322,667 ; legs and pieces, 5931 in 1928, and 4,337 in 1929, a decrease of 1,594 ; lamb carcases 6,047,836 in 1928, and' 5,957,578 in 1929, a decrease of 90,258.
