H. McDonald, W. Neil, E. Shaw, J. Walmsley, and W. Fathers, hon. secretary. The secretary was instructed to notify the Morrinsville Rugby Union that Paeroa would be playing Piako on July 27, and' was prepared to accept the result of that match in connection with the Peace Cup challenge. It was also agreed that the names of Messrs E. T. V. Johnson, T. W. Jonas, and E. L. Shaw, referees, be forwarded to the Morrinsville Rugby Union. The representative teams as submitted by the selectors were approved. It was left in the hands of the chairman to arrange with Mr Arnold to have the sheds and grounds put in order, and also to obtain a lock for the changing shed. Accounts totalling £l7 15s Were passed for payment. It was decided to try and arrange a third-grade match between Paeroa and Hauraki Plains as a curtain-raiser at Paeroa on Saturday next. Iri the event of this not being possible, the alternative of a United v. High School match was decided on. Mr E. Shaw appointed manager of the junior team and Mr J. M. Crosby manager in connection with the Hauraki Plains match on Saturday. The meeting decided to entertain the Hauraki Plains players at the Commercial Hotel. In connection with the Birch Cup fixtures, it was decided to write to the Thames Rugby Union to arrange suitable dates. Further arrangements in connection with the Birch Cup and Johnston Cup matches were deferred until the next meeting. A sub-committee, consisting of , .Messrs McDonald, Neil, and Walmswas appointed, subject to the approval of the Sports Queen committee’s chairman, to arrange a tl match in
connection with the Queen Carnival on a date suitable to the union. The matter of purchasing a number of seats for the ground was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. The Veterans nominations for the Drysdale Cup competition were accepted and the matter deferred until the next meeting. Messrs J. W. Pratley and J. Walmsley were appointed volunteer gatekeepers for Saturday, and Mr B. Neil agreed to look after the jerseys. PAEROA REFEREES. FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. At a meeting of the active referees of the Paeroa Referees’ Association on Saturday night there were present Messrs B. Neil (chairman), T. W. Jonas, C. Rolton, H. M. Shand, E. L. Shaw, H. J. Wilton, E. Smith (secretary), and A. Keighley, a player. Messrs T. W. Jonas, F. T. V. Johnson, and E. L. Shaw were nominated as referees'to control Peace Cup fixtures. The secretary was instructed to write to the Paeroa Rugby Union in the matter of the dangerous condition of the playing areas, as several holes needed filling in. Also to ask each club to supply a ball, as there had been occasions when teams had taken the field without one. Several questions were asked by different members and fully discussed. PLAINS RUGBY UNION. MEETING AT NGATEA. Reaping the harvest that it has allowed to grow up by its lax methods the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union has now found its control clogged and ineffective, and, profiting by its experience, it has set about to apply the pruning knife and to fix its branches in the direction that they should grow. By adopting new by-laws at a meeting on Monday evening the knife will be applied to the power of delegates who, when the by-laws become effective, will no longer direct the affairs, but will merely represent their club’s case to an independent body elected at a general meeting of all footballers and football supporters. In other directions the weaknesses of the past were fully realised, and steps taken to ensure an improvement in the future. There were present at the meeting Messrs H. Dent (president of the union), W. Madgwick, A. H. Sutton, C. A. Hayward, P. Williams, C. S. Foster, C. Bertelsen, W. Green, F. Rogers, and W. P. Wylde (hon. secretary). Fruits -of the past were received in another big batch of protests. By-laws. A new set of by-laws, similar to those in use in other districts, but amended to suit local conditions, was submitted by the secretary. They contained the many regulations made by the union from time to time, but the major alteration was in those clauses determining the constitution of the union, which was amended on the lines advocated at the previous pieeting by Mr C. 8. Foster. The affairs of the union would be managed by a committee of management elected at the annual meeting. Club delegates could attend all meetings and speak but not vote. The by-laws were approved with minor amendments, and ordered to be submitted to the Thames Valley Rugby Union for its approval. Regrading Neglected. The Kerepeehi Club entered a protest concerning the playing of M. Martin in the Ngatea-Kerepeehi junior match on June 15. The protest stated that Martin had played in senior representative games for Hauraki Plains, and it was understood that under the rules of Rugby no such player could be regraded to junior status. Mr W. Green, Kerepeehi, said that the protest was not entered in an antagonistic manner, but merely as one of those matters which required tightening up. ilt was explained that Martin had played, in one : senior representative game at Waihi last season merely because the team was short of players, and he happened to be at Waihi. He was certainly not a senior grade player, and was not even up to junior representative standard. It was agreed that the case was another which showed the necessity of revising the rules of the union so that the position would be made clear and definite. The protest was upheld. t Appeal Against Decision. The Kerepeehi Club wrote forwarding a protest against the decision of the union at its previous meeting to be forwarded to the Thames Valley Rugby Union. The Thames Valley Rugby Union wrote asking for particulars of this protest, which concerned the playing by the Waitakaruru Club of C. Stretton in the match against Kerepeehi. } The secretary’s statement was approved for transmission to the Thames Valley Rugby Union. Match to be Replayed. The Waitakaruru Club entered a protest concerning the senior match at Ngatea on Saturday last on the grounds that the Ngatea team was not on the field at 2.45 p.m., and that the referee did not allow the Waitakaruru team to kick off and claim the match ; also on the grounds that the Ngatea Club had played Masters, a Hamilton player, and McMahon, a Patetonga player, neither of whom had had a clearance or had been registered. The matter was discussed fully, all members concurring that action should be taken to make clubs carry out the directions of the union in regard to the time of starting matches. The protest was upheld and a replay was ordered. Representative Game Arrangements. Full arrangements were made for the Poland Cup and Sharebrokers’ Cup competition games. Two tenders were received for the transportation
to the other districts, and that c-f Mr J, H. Nicholson was accepted. It was decided that visiting representative teams be given tea after the match at Messrs. W. and V. Montgomery’s tea-rooms but that Plains players be not given tea after home matches. The onus of notifying representative players of their selection was put on to club secretaries. It was decided that in future players would not be allowed their expenses for travellign to home matches. The preparation of the field was placed in the hands of the Ngatea Club. School Representatives. Mr R. C. Abel, secretary of the Hauraki Plains Primary Schools’ Rugby Union, wrote advising that the Schools representative team had been entered for the Fleming Shield competition, and would thus have to travel to Paeroa, Waihi, and Te Aroha on the same dates as would the union’s junior representatives. The union was asked to provide transportation, and also for financial assistance towards the cost of entertaining the visiting school teams. A grant of £3 3s was made, and Mr W. Madgwick offered to pay for tea for the visiting team on Saturday next at Montgomery’s’ tea-rooms. Members spoke of the generosity of Mr Madgwick, and the appreciation of the union was recorded in the minutes. Thames Valley Union. The Thames Valley Rugby Union advised that there would be an executive committee meeting next Saturday afternoon to consider the Kerepeehi club’s protest, the British tour, Bay of Plenty match, and second round of the Poland Cup matches. Maramarua Juniors. The Ngatea junior team was directed to play the Maramarua team at Maramarua on July 6. Charity Match. The Turua club was given permission to play a match with the Hikutaia Club. It was stated that the gate receipts would be sent to one of the earthquake relief funds. Match with Thames. The Thames Rugby Union wrote accepting July 20 for the matches at Thames, due in return for visits last season.
