THE SPORTS QUEEN.

A SUCCESSFUL DANCE. HUMOROUS INTERLUDE. One of the most successful dances and euchre tournaments of the season took place last night in the Gaiety Theatre, the occasion being in aid of the Sports Queen for funds for the unemployment scheme. The hall was comfortably filled, and many visitors from outlying towns and districts attended, including busloads from Kaa’angahake, Waihi, and Te Aroha. Mr M. Beattie, who acted as M.C., deserves great credit in keeping the dancing so that dll enjoyed themselves to the uttermost without any undue excess of too high spirited exuberance. The band, which was a voluntary one, played a varied and delightful selection oi music that pleased all who danced to its strains. The fully-attended euchre tournament, conducted by Mr L. Gibb, resulted in the first ladies’ prize being won by Mrs Nevin and the first men’s by Mrs Poland. Both these ladies handed back their prizes so as to further benefit the funds.

A humorous interlude, which was punctuated by peals of happy laughtea-, was a mock wedding staged. Cr. El. W. Ward officiated as the parson, and with due ceremony “united in matrimony” Mr P. Mill, the bride, and Mr J. M. Crosby, the bridegroom. Mr Alan Fathers made a screamingly funny “bridesmaid,” and was assisted in his duties by Messrs R. Kusabs and F. Knight, train-bearers. Mr C. Vincent made an excellent best man, and Mr C. Treanor groomsman. Altogether it was a most excellent display of good-natured, exceedingly mirthful burlesque.
