LOCAL AND GENERAL
Mr M. J. Savage, M.P., deputy-lead-er of the N.Z. Labour Party, will deliver an address in the Gaiety Theatre at 8 p.m. this evening. Those interested, whatever their political leanings may be, are cordially invited to attend.
Rev. J. Lowden will speak in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening on the “Discarded Cross, or Paganism in Paeroa.” Representatives of two firms whose, business ramifications are world-wide, and one of a firm that includes the whole of the Dominion in its area, established their headquarters in Paeroa this week.
The recent heavy rains have made parts of the Paeroa-Waihi road rather unpleasant to drive over owing to their slippery nature. The WaihiWaikino portion is in good condition, but the stretch between Waikino and Karangahake necessitates more or less watchful driving. However, improvements aer already in hand. The old blinding which has served its purpose is now being partially removed, and will be replaced by hard metal and fine chips. Arrangements have been made to convey metal from the Thames County Council’s quarry at Matatoki by rail to Karangahake, where it will be available for spreading by lorry. When the surplus present blinding has been removed and the fine metal spread it is hoped the road will be in a much more satisfactory condition.
