The earthquake on Monday morning was felt on most parts of the Hauraki Plains, though few people on Kercpeehi Hill or on the hill country about Kaihere knew of it until told. The movement was so gentle that many people, in houses near roads mistook the shaking and the noise as the common occurrence due to road traffic, but a great many people did not realise that the earth was moving and thought that they were becoming faint.
