QUEEN CARNIVAL.
RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT. COMMITTEES FORMED. The Mayor, Mr W. Marshall, announced at the community singing on Friday night that the unemployment scheme had been further advanced. Arrangements for the holding of a queen carnival had been put in hand and committees fornjed for each of the proposed three queens—Business, Sports, and Farmers’, with Messrs E. Edwards, J. W. Silcock, and H. J. Hare, respectively, at the heads of the committees. It was proposed that each queen should have her own colours, and that every day at noon the flag of the leading queen would be hoisted on the flagpole of the Borough Chambers, or some such suitable spot, and night coloured lights to serve the same purpose. These ideas were to help create greater enthusiasm and interest. The various queens would be announced not later than next Wednesday, and in the meantime His Worship said he had great pleasure in announcing the campaign open.
Cr. Edwards announced as his business men’s committee, 1 Cr. H. M. Shand and Messrs I. Amy, C. Bassett, P. E. Brenan, R. S. Carden, J. P. Gamble, C. M. Gee, S. J. Hedge, J. R. Kidd, D. Leach, D. McWatters, G. Masters, E. Powell, F. Williams, and P. Williams. Their first meeting would be held at 7.30 p.m. on Monday in Messrs Brocket and Shand’s offices over their store. Cr. Edwards extended a hearty welcome to every business man and resident interested to attend. For the Sports Committee Cr. J. W. Silcock announced Cr. F. E. Flatt and Messrs W. Allen, W. Bain, J. M. Crosby, R, Flatt, J. M. Fox, G. Lamb, J. C. McDonald, C. W. Malcolm, L. Masters, R. L. Miller, W. Neil, W. D. Nicholas, E. G. Preston, K. Slyfield, C. Vincent, and J. Walmsley. A ladies committee would be formed later. The preliminary meeting would be held at .7.30 p.m. on Monday in the supperroom of the Soldier’s Club. Cr. Silcock remarked that he realised the job was hefty, but he also realised that there was a strong representative committee behind the Sports Queen. He felt sure their queen would wear the crown. Cr. Silcock, in conclusion, said he regretted the difference in opinion at the meeting and in the town, and sincerely hoped that all would work with one opinion and raise sufficient funds for the War Memorial. Cr. H. J. Hare’s Farmers’ Committee consists of Cr. H. Bray, Messrs P. Hubbard, G. McMillan, C Neaber, C. N. O’Neill, A. F. Steedman, F. Thorp, B. E. Veale, G. Vowles, and J. and V. Young. The initial meeting would be held in Hare Bros’, office on Monday at 7.30 p.m. Cr. Hare hoped that farmers’ wives and daughters would also attend. Continuing, he sa’.d the farmers might not have all the brains, but they had the money, and the money was the main thing. He was himself happy that night for personal reasons, but the job now before him was the happiest he had ever been associated with.
