FOOTBALL.
LAST SATURDAY’S MATCHES. WEST V. SUBURBS. A dogged, well-fought game resulted in Suburbs defeating West by a narrow margin on Saturday at the Domain. Although close throughout, the better team on the day’s play won. The teams were as follows :— Suburbs.—Rare, Bennett, Royal, . Harper, Murphy, McGarvey, Mcßae, Vedder, Duncan, Tohu, A. Morrison, Thomas, Killgour, Wyatt,* Vedder. West, —Fraser, Vercoe, Swann, Wells, Poland, McKinnon, Knight, Hamilton, Henderson, Brown, Beagley, Page, G. Taylor, Kerr, Vause. McKinnon kicked off and Mcßae made an opening. Fraser cleared and Rare returned to Swann, who found the line. From the throw-in the Suburbs forwards dribbled through and tight play ensued in West’s twentyfive. Rare kicked the ball out, .and from the throw-in Vercoe'forced. The drop-out went to Mcßae, who set up an advance, and T. Bennett was unlucky not to score. Swann then set the West backs going. Kerr made a - good run, assisted by Beagley, Taylor, and Page, but the opposing forwards •. soon brought play back to midfield. In loose play a West player infringed, but Mcßae failed to score with the kick. Tight play ensued in West’s territory until Fraser forced. Suburbs kept West defending until Swann made an opening and Knight and Brown did some good work, taking the play into the visitors’ twenty-five, from where Knight was unfortunate in not scoring. Suburbs attacked after the changeover, and in a nice movement the ball was handled by Mcßae, Morrison, Bennett and Royal, the latter scoring a nice try. Wyatt failed to convert. Suburbs 3, West 0. Suburbs immediately resumed the pressure, and Morrison did some good work. R. Tahu broke away and had a drop-kick at goal, placing the ball between the posts with a beautiful kick. Suburbs 7, 'West 0. Tight play followed in neutray territory, and Swann gained 30 yards with a fine line-kick. Thomas received in the line-out, but the West backs were playing too close to be effective. Suburbs were penalised and Swann converted. Suburbs 7, West 3. On resuming after half-time Tohu with a mark sent his side on the attack, but Mcßae kicked too hard and the ball went to the dead-ball line. The pressure was not relaxed, and T. Bennett received from Morrison only to be pushed out five yards from the ’goal-line. Tight play then ensued until Taylor, Page, Knight, and Brown made a combined rush, but Royal was equal to the occasion and gaining pos 7 session passed to Tohu, who kicked and followed up, The position was dangerous for West until Swann came to the rescue with a good kick to midfield. From the line-out Page gained more ground for West by punting, . and Knight, Taylor, Kerr, and Wells followed up and did good work. Wells made a good run and then lost possession, but Poland was in support and crossed the line. Swann converted. West 8, Suburbs 7. In loose play West gained the advantage until C. Vedder relieved to neutral territory. In the last quarter West gained ground in loose play. Suburbs in- ' fringed, but from the scrum gained half the lengS of the field, Frazer cleared. Ra^returned the ball and Vercoe forced. Play became hard on West’s line until the defenders were penalised and Mcßae converted, the ball touching the bar. Suburbs 10, West 8. In open play Suburbs showed to advantage until Vercoe sent the ball to Kerr for him to put his side in a good position with a nice kick. Pressure by West saw Vercoe, Swann, and Brown doing good work. McGarvey relieved with a good run, and put West on the defensive. .Rare took a mark, but from his kick West set up a rush. Suburbs were penalised and Swann took a kick, but failed to convert, the game then ending with the scores Suburbs 10, West 8. TRIAL MATCHES. * .TEAMS FOR NEXT SATURDAY..
