FARMERS’ UNION.
NGATEA BRANCH MEETING. VARIETY OF BUSINESS. The Ngatea branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Darlington presiding over Messrs W. Spence, W. McDuff, W. Phillips, IT. Irwin, G. Phillips, and F. Spee lj. secretary. County Election. Mr W. Mclnnes, Kaihere, wrote thanking the union for its letter’ asking him to stand for election for the County Council and advising that earlier in the day of receipt he had attended a meeting at Ngatea and had voluntarily withdrawn in favour <f Mr J. Motion. He thanked the union for its compliment and for its promise of support. In reply to Mr W. Phillips it was explained that the letter was written on April 19, and was received on April 24, possibly on account of the roundabout route taken by mails from Ngatea through Ohinewai, to Kaihere. After a long fruitless discussion the letter was received, Mr W. Phillips voting against. Finance. The secretary reported having written to the Auckland provincial secretary asking for a statement of accounts, but no reply had been received. The secretary was instructed to write again. Abattoirs. Mr W. Phillips stated that he had noticed .that the County Council had mentioned the question of abattoirs for the county. He moved that the County Council be advised that in the opinion of the union the time had arrived when the county should have an abattoir, and that all meat should be inspected. Mr G. Phillips seconded. Mr McDuff considered that the matter should be taken above the County Council, as it was liable to let the question lay dormant. On his suggestion it was agreed to communicate with the Public Health Department as well. Paeroa-Pokeno Railway. On the motion of Mr McDuff it was decided that the chairman and secretary be a deputation to wait on the Minister of Railways in support of the Paeroa-Pokeno railway. Advice on Manuring. The chairman mentioned that at the Waikato Show a member had learned that Mr Lindsay Robb, an English expert on fertilisers, was in New Zealand on loan to the Agricultural Department, and that on request to the department he would visit Hauraki Plains to investigate its soils and deliver a lecture to farmers. It was decided to issue the invitation. Thanks. Mr E. L. Walton wrote thanking the union for its expression of thanks for his services as county chairman and regret that he would not again offer his services. Time of Meetings. Mr Speedy gave notice of intention to move the rescinding of the motion fixing the time of meeting at 8 p.m., and on his motion the next meeting will be held.at 1.30 p.m. on the first Wednesday in July. Transport Advisory Council. A circular letter was received from the Auckland Provincial Branch drawing attention to the constitution of the Motor Transport Advisory Council, and urged that representations be made to the end that those who contributed towards the upkeep of roads should 1 be given greater representation. On the motion of Mi’ W. Phillips it was agreed to do as urged.
