FOOTBALL.
TO-MORROW’S FIXTURES. MATCHES TO BE PLAYED. On Saturday at the domain East and Pirates seniors try conclusions on No. 1 ground at 3 p.m. East suffered somewhat heavily at the hands of West last Saturday, but inference has it that they are going to give Pirates a decidedly hard game. Pirates, who are worthy of a win, will have to look to their colours. At Hlkutaia West meet Suburbs. Suburbs have not suffered a defeat this season, and with West determined to be the first team to defeat them, an interesting and exciting match is assured. Also at Hikutaia the junior teams of East and Suburbs meet, while the West team has a bye.SCHOOL COMPETITION. The inter-school competition commences to-morrow morning at the domain at 10.30 o’clock. Four teams are taking part in the. competition, two from the District High School augmented by boys from the Convent, one representing Hikutaia, Hikutaia West, and Komata, and one united representing Netherton, Karangahake, and Tirohia. Paeroa A plays United, and Paeroa B plays Hikutaia. . CRITICISM OF PLAYERS. ' (By Onlooker.) The following constructive criticism by an authority on Rugby is published in the hope that it will be of benefit to the players and to the game in general. Pirates.—Pearcey has not forgotten the way to hook. Killgour is playing a splendid game, but Frost is the outstanding forward playing in Paeroa this season. Bullock played a hard game last Saturday. McCollum, fiveeighths, has plenty of dash, as has his brother, who would probably be better played closer up, instead of Coldicutt. Bax plays a safe game, but with not enough dash; he should run straight. Pullar is safe, but waits for the bounce of the ball too much. This team could do with more training and goal-kicking practice
Suburbs.—Thomas and Vedder are playing good football and are outstanding in this team, the resc being good hard workers. Wyatt played a good game last Saturday. F. Morrison has been playing well as halfback, and will be missed. G., Royal has played better footabll—his passes are very erratic. Mcßae still plays a hard game. Bennett plays good club football, but the best back in his team is McGarvey. Rare is safe as full-back, but should practice kicking xyith both feet.
East.—The Neil brothers are honest workers. Fitch is the best forward in this team, being an honest worker. Johnson plays hard football, but not brilliant. The others are only medium. Moore as half-back has had to do more than his share so far this season. McQuarters will make a big difference to this team. Treanor plays a very safe game. The rest are only ordinary. McNeil turned out last Saturday for East, and with a little training will be a big help to the team. West.—This team has no outstanding players. Page plays good football, and Carrick is improving each game. Taylor handles the ball well. Knight plays a fair game, but not hard enough. Henderson is a good forward in the loose but not in the- tight stuff. Beagley also plays a fair game, and Hamilton is a hard worker. McKinnon is fair but not brilliant. Masters is a good defensive player, but has not improved any. Nield is sound and takes the ball well, and is always there when needed. Verran has played bettei’ football. Swann has not improved any, and should try and kick with both feet. Fraser is playing better football this season, and is on the improve. This team plays good club football and is always hard to beat.
