LOCAL AND GENERAL
Though not yet definitely announced, it is practically certain that Thursday as Paeroa’s official halfholiday will take place on and as from June 6. While the noification is not as yet gazetted, the Mayor, who is in communication with the Minister responsible, is confident that it is safe to make arrangements for June-8 as the first late Saturday shopping day. The Thames Valley Power Board’s pole dump at Kopu has been removed to Paeroa. This move was due to the high rate of freights by direct board from Newcastle, N.S.W., to Kopu, as against the lower freight rates to Auckland and transhipment by scow to Paeroa and the Plains. This method not only means a considerable saving in freight money, but in handling as well. It is with great regret that we have to record the death on Friday night of Master Clement Roberts, the eleven-year-old son of Mr and Mrs R. I. Roberts, of Paeroa. The boy while playing in some thick grass on May 16, cut his foot on a piece of glass. Mrs Roberts carefully bathed and iodised the cut, and the daily assiduous attention given it apparently effected a heal. But on Monday the unfortunate lad complained of a stiffness in his neck. A doctor who was immediately called ordered Master Roberts to Thames Hospital, whe’*e after a gallant light he sdccnmbed to lockjaw.
