AWAITI-TIROHIA ROAD.

LINE NOT YET LEGALISED. SUGGESTION BY DEPARTMENT. With reference to the representations made at Netherton to the Minister of Public Works, a reply has been received through Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., advising the Hauraki Plains County Council that the Awaiti-Tiro-hia Road question had been investigated. Portions of the road lay in both the Piako and Hauraki Plains counties, but the line was not yet legalised, and when the investigation was made last year the Piako Council was not in a position to expend any money on fencing or legalisation, owing to the fact that it had so many more urgent works requiring attention. This attitude was still the same, but since September' last the Plains County Council had expended £4O on its section of the road, and desired this section legalised. “ It would appear from the information held by the Public Works Department that consideration might be. given to the provision of Government funds for construction purposes on this road, but it is not possible for the Government to authorise the expenditure of any funds on other than legalised roads lines. Legalisation is, of course, a matter for the-attention of the controlling local authorities, and in the case in question, until such time as the Hauraki Plains and Piako County Councils have finalised legalisation, it will not be'possible to provide Government funds for construction purposes.” The letter concluded by suggesting that those interested should endeavour to arrange with those local bodies to have their portions of the road legalised as soon as possible, and when this has been done the question concerning Government assistance for construction purposes would then receive further consideration. Cr. Reid reported that a deputation had recently explained to the Hon. G. W. Forbes that 2000 acres of land could be opened for settlement if the road was legalised. It would be desirable to await his reply.
