Increased attention is being given to sheep in the Waitekauri district, where the land has been found emi'nently suitable for them. One large farmer has recently given up dairying completely and gone in for sheep alone. Pipe tobacco alone contributed £130,384 to the New Zealand revenue during the first quarter of the pressent year, in the shape of Customs duties. Wonderful is t,he popularity of what Charles Kingsley called “ the divinist weed under heaven." Opponents of tobacco may say what they will, but the fact remains,— smoking does more good than harm, provided always that the ‘baccy is pure and of first-class quality. It’s undoubtedly true however, that brands heavily charged with nicotine are, best avoided, and it is po less true that the imported tobaccos are, practically all open to that objection. Our own New Zealand varieties are the best. Sweejt, cool, and fragrant they are. comparatively free from nicotine, and the fact that the leaf is toasted is the secret of their delightful flavour and fine aroma. They don’t bite the; tongue ; they don’t affect the heart or nerves. They may be indulged in freely without fear of consequences. There are several varieties. Ask your tobacconist for * Riverhead Gold’’ mild, “Navy Cut” (Bulldog) medium, or “ Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead) full strength.
