DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. REQUEST FOR SUBSIDY. One of the deputations received by the Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister for Lands, at Ngatea on Thursday last concerned the need for a playing area in the township. By a mistake it was announced to the Pressmen present as a private deputation. Messrs H. Dent, A. H. McClean, and J. Motion were the speakers, and they pointed out that no playing area had been set aside for Ngatea, as had been done elsewhere on the Plains. This was due to the fact that Ngatea was not a Government township, but had .been developed as the result of private enterprise. The population was such that it was now necessary to seriously consider the question of providing a playing area. Those interested had secured an option to purchase an area of from ten to twelve acres at £45 an acre. It was desired that the Government should assist by granting a subsidy. In the course of his reply the Minister said that the Government recognised the necessity for granting assistance to back-block areas where no provision had been made for playing areas. However, the matter would depend on the amount of money placed at ,his disposal for such purposes by the Minister of Finance. If the deputation would forward him definite proposals he would give the matter careful consideration when the Estimates were being prepared.
