The Mayor has received information that the Government has approved an unemployment subsidy for Paeroa Borough amounting to £7OO on a £ for £ basis. The formal authority for this amount has been issued urgently, and the conditions thereto will be forwarded as soon as possible.
A collision occurred on Tuesday on the railway near Mangaiti, the Tau-ranga-Auckland express striking a linesman’s jigger. The jigger was badly damaged, but, fortunately, the man on it escaped injury. Had the express been an express in the real sense- of the word there might have been a very different story to tell.
The Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, has advised Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., that he will be pleased to visit the district to look into the question of the Paeroa-Pokeno railway as soon as he is able to spare the time. The Minister will advise Mr Samuel when he is in a position to arrange a definite date.
To-morrow the members of the Paeroa Defence Rifle Club will complete the Club competitions, weather permitting. Shooting will be carried out from the 300yds and 500yds ranges.
Next Sunday, Whitsunday or the Feast of Pentecost, is the birthday of the Christian Church and one of the days of obligation. The special services at St. Paul’s Church will be Holy Communion at 7 a.m., Holy Eucharist, sung, at 9 a.m., and Festal Evensong at 7 p.m. Whitsunday is set apart throughout the Anglican Church in New Zealand for special prayers and almsgiving on behalf of Mission work in the Diocese of Melanesia, and the offerings in all the churches on that day are given to the Mission. The clearance sale at Netherton, on behalf of Mr H. J. Hare, who has sold his farm, is to take place on Friday next, May 24, and not the 29th, as previously advertised. The sale will be conducted by the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. An old anomaly has been removed by the decision of the postal authorities to place that portion of the Coromandel Peninsula which was heretofore in the Auckland postal district under the jurisdiction of Thames. Football matches to take place on the Plains to-morrow are as follows : Ngatea at Waitakaruru, Plains West at Kerepeehi. Turua has a bye, and will play C. 0.8. team, Thames, at TUrua. The illustrations in this week’s issue of the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review” cover a wide field, including the very latest events at home and abroad. The double centre pages are charmingly filled with a choice selection of photographs. Racing is represented by scenes from the Franklin Racing Club’s meeting and a thrilling page of Grand National incidents. Advance fashions from New York designers occupy a page. Another series is that of the Ponsonby v. Manukau Rugby match at Eden Park. The fine stage and motion picture photographs are sure to please, and the coloured supplement carries its own charm.
