THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 1929. LOCAL AND GENERAL

While not in the nature of a stampede the polling at the Ohinemuri County Council Chambers was steady all this morning, sufficient to evidence that interest is being displayed. Indications are that the voting will be much heavier this afternoon. The elections for Paeroa Riding and the Hospital Board are causing a great deal of speculating, nothing having transpired to point to any individual candidate being a certainty. Returns of revenue collected in the postal districts of the Dominion for the quarter ended March 31 show the Thames district with £25,425 7s lid—in twelfth place out of twenty. At the meeting at Te Aroha of St. Mark’s parishioners it was stated that during the year it was proposed to present Archdeacon Cowie with a car, a gift from the whole diocese. When sufficient funds are in hand it is hoped the object will be fulfilled. A splendid record in swimming has been attained by the pupils of the Paeroa District High School during the past season. As the result of instruction given by the teaching staff and bath custodian, no less than 96 children have gained certificates for swimming efficiency. Of these 11 were certificates of merit granted to those swimming 880 yards or more, 34 proficiency ones for distances between 220 and 880 yards, and 52 learners’ ones for distances between 50 and 220 yards. As a fitting conclusion to such a successful season these certificates will be presented to the winners on Friday at 2.30 p.m. in the school. Parents are always welcome at all school functions, but on this occasion they will be more than ever so. The chairman, Mr F. M. Strange, in welcoming two new members—Messrs J. M. Allen and H. D. Torr—to the Thames Valley Power Board at its meeting yesterday, expressed the opinion that it was a pity more young men of Mr Alien’s age were not coming forward for public service. Sportsmen who visited the upper reaches of the Piako River at the opening of the present shooting season report that ducks were very scarce. It appears that in the first three days the best total for any one gun was a dozen ducks. The ducks had been scattered prior to the opening of the season. Before the meeting of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board at Te Aroha commenced yesterday members, on the motion of the chairman, stood a few moments in silence as a tribute to the memory of the late Mr W. G. Swaney, late superintendent at Arapuni and Horahora. New Zealand naturalisation papers were granted on April 30 to one Belgian, one Japanese, and one Russian. Two Turua footballers received injuries in the first match of the season on Saturday last. Hector Schofield received a fractured arm, and Fred. Gray fractured a bone in his hand.
