THAMES HOSPITAL.

MEETING OF BOARD. The Thames Hospital Board held its monthly meeting on Monday, Mr W. E. Hale presiding over Messrs E. L. Walton, 0. W., Parfitt, A. R. Robinson, W. J. Hall, P, E. Brenan, C. W. S. Flett, J. W. Danby, W. C. Kennedy, and G. Tonge (secretary). Paeroa Hospital. • The Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health, wrote acknowledging receipt of the letter conveying the board’s confirmation of the agreement made regarding the Paeroa Maternity Hospital. He expressed pleasure that the matter had been finally settled and hoped that amicable relations would continue to exist. The Tafaru Farm. The chairman reported having visited the farm ht the District Homes in company with Mr J. L. Bruce, of the Agricultural Department, whose report would come before the board at its next meeting. Patients at Waihi. The Waihi Hospital Board forwarded particulars t of four patients from the Thames Board’s district who had been admitted to the Waihi Hospital as urgent cases. A coincidence was that two of these cases were seven-year-old brothers from Waikino, who were admitted on the same day suffering from acute appendicitis. Report on Hospital. The-resident surgeon, Dr. W. Sowerby, reported that April had been a ’ fairly heavy month in all departments. Thirty-six females and 49 males had been admitted during the month, five had died, and 43 males and 32 females had been discharged, leaving 38 males and 27 females remaining. Sixteen outpatients had been given 122 attendances, and 49 operations had been performed. District Homes. The- superintendent of' the District Homes, Tanaru, reported that the conduct of the 20 men and one woman in the homes had been good. The farm and garden were in good order, but the milk and egg production was falling off. ' • • The Homes Committee recommended that the tender of F. Battson for the installation of electric light be accepted. In regard to the application of Mr Appleby for an increase in salary, the committee had nothing to recommend. ' The report was adopted. The Outdistrict. The district nurse to natives, Miss N. Jamieson, Paeroa, reported having made 82 visits to 79 patients. Schools had been visited and lectures given. Charitable Aid. On the relieving officer reporting on the charitable aid granted during the month, the chairman mentioned that the prospects for the coming winter were not pleasing. The position was darker than ever before, Finance. Accounts totalling £1744 12s were passed for payment. Assitant Engineer. The applications for the position of assistant engineer numbered 29, and Mr H. Nicholls was the one appointed. Leave of Absence. Mr W.’ J. Hall applied for and was granted leave of absence io enable him to visit England. ’ On the motion‘of Mi Kennedy it was agreed to'grant an old Waikino resident who had been a cripple from birth £1 a month. The engineer mentioned in hi/ report that since the laundryman had taken charge steam had not been required in the laundry every day in the week? The coal consumption for the month was 40 tons 16cwt. Tenders. ’ , • The following tenders were'accepted for the supply of commodities during the ensuing year : — . Fish.—Shortland Fish Company. Meat. —Hardman And Sons. Firewood. —A. White. Coal.—Clen Afton Collieries. Farm Produce.—W. Scott. Bread.—W. R. Gleeson. Painting Buildings.—The second lowest tender in the following list was accepted for painting the buildings.— . F. J. Summerhayes, Auckland, 298 12s ; E. L. Carnaby, Auckland, £396 10s (accepted) ; P. Thomas, Auckland, £427 9s; Burch and Burch, Auckland, £578; Bertant and Speer, Auckland, £578; McDonald and Cordes, Thames, £600; A- R ae > Thames, £613 ; A. Salter, Hamilton, £ll9B 14s. Funeral arrangements were placed in the hands of R. Twentyman. In regard to the tenders received for the supplies of drapery and groceries, the chairman reported that as some tenderers had quoted, lower prices than others for some articles and higher for other articles, the total cost of the quantity of goods used last year was calculated on the prices tendered. In the case of drapery the difference only amounted to £B, and as the matron had examined the samples and had made a recommendation he would move that the tender of Mr Arbury be accepted, though in the aggregate the cost was the highest. , The motion was carried. In the case of groceries the difference in the total prices on the basis of last year’s supply was only £1 19s Id, and it was accordingly decided to accept the tender of W. Scott and to send a letter of appreciation to Ensor Bros.
