COUNTY WORKS.
OPERATIONS IN OHINEMURI. ENGINEER’S REPORT FOR APRIL The following report by the actingengineer of the Ohinemuri County for the period ended April 30, 1929. was submitted and passed at the meeting of the council on Thursday last: - - Waihi Riding. “The metalling of the three sections on the Waihi-Whangamata road is being pushed on, the workmen having been most of this period on the spreading. Every effort is being made to have the above work completed before the wet weather sets in. The patching of Frankton Road has been started, and will proceed directly the above work is completed. Mangaiti Riding. “All roads in this riding are in a satisfactory state. The gravelling of portion of the Old Te Aroha road is proceeding. Kaimanawa Riding. “Tenders were called and contracts let for the cleaning of all road drains, and the work is proceeding. Tenders were also called for gravelling and formation of the Maratoto Mine road. Paeroa Riding. “General maintenance has been carried out on all roads in this riding. The Rotokohu road during the last month has been damaged by the carting of heavy logs, and I found it necessary to stop this carting ; but at the request of the owner of the logs for permission to continue the carting for one more day I consented upon the condition that he assist in the repairs to the road, to which he agreed, offering to supply a truck to cart metal, replace a broken culvert, and supply timber for the repairs to a small bridge. I shall see that these conditions are complied with. Waikino Riding. “All the roads and footpaths have received attention. Proposals for the metalling of the Waitawheta deviation have been sent to the Public Works Department for approval. Estimates for the metalling of portion of Farrelly’s Road have also been sent forward. Karangahake Riding. “The Tirohia Station road from the main road to the railway gates has been metalled, the council’s trucks being used to cart material. The above metal can be rolled and blinded when the road roller is working in this vicinity. Portions of Rahu Road have been patched. Main Highway. “Hamilton-Paeroa. —The raising of the two low portions of this highway was completed during the month and the surfacing with fine metal is proceeding. : Nethertoli Ferry,Hikutaia. “The surfacing of this road has proceeded steadily during the last period, and only about 25 chains require to be done to complete the work. With the advent of the wet weather the formation has become very soft, and will not stand rolling, and as the roller is required on the Paeroa-Hikutaia road the rolling of the above work will be discontinued. Kopu-Paeroa. “The surfacing of this length has been held up on account of the roller and scafifier being required elsewhere. The crushing plant at Komata has also been idle because of the water in the creek being too high to obtain the stone. Paeroa Water Supply. “The two-inch main crossing the railway bridge over the Ohinemuri River at Paeroa and supplying water to the Native Settlement on the western and eastern sides of the line and also to the settlers on the Te Aroha Road, Mill Road and Ryall’s Road, was laid dowri approximately 17 years ago on the railway property parallel with the Paeroa-Auckland line foi - a length of 32 chains and 20ft from the rails. The Railway Department, when building the new Frankton line, | buried the pipes to a considerable depth, and recently a break occurred in this main, thus cutting all the water off the area served by these pipes. An attempt was at once made to carry out repairs, and the Railway Department’s inspector of permanent ways was notified. The department’s representative, when viewing the damage being done to the railway embankment, ordered the council’s workmen to cease excavating under the bank. The break in the main at this point is about 10ft below the rail level, and as this pipe-line cannot be used for the future it will be necessary to connect at the railway bridge and lay a new main. Pipes for this purpose have been ordered. In the meantime a temporary supply with the pipe available has been paid on.” Concerning Frankton Road, Cr. Mason stated that it badly needed patching, and he asked if it would be possible for it to be rolled. The engineer replied that he thought arrangements could be made whereby the steam roller owned by the Waihi Borough Council could be borrowed to do the work.
