BAZAAR AT TURUA.

TOWN BAND’S EFFWiffi. £l4'o FOR UNIFORMS. A very succesful bazaar was held in the Turua Town Hall, Turua, on Thursday, just, over £l4O being raised toward the cost of providing uniforms for the boys of the Turua Town Band. This splendid achievement waa dne to the energetic, work of the local committee and particularly Mr W. H. Taylor, who for many weeks past ha,s been actively engaged in securing donations, from the people of the district. The people; of Turua arc justifiably proud of the progress of the band, and responded liberally with ance and donations, as well as attending the bazaar in very large numbers, and patronising all the stalls and competitions. An instance of the; measure o< public support and of the work of the ladies’ committeie was afi'drdedl by the fact that Mr C- Stott, who was in charge of the meat stall, had for sale over seventy dreSßedi ducks and. fowls. Mr Taylor had been promised many more, but owing to the amount of goods to be; collected it. was not possible to bring the birds in in time for them to be plucked and cleaned. Pork, mutton, and fish were also sold in large quantities at this stall. Similarly, at the produce stall, therie/ were; mptt’e donations than, could be conveniently accommodated on the tables, and reserve stocks were stored in an ante-room of the hall- Mesdames T. H. White, O. C. Allan, and A. j. Heasejman were; in charge of this booth The next stall was stocked with cakes, etc. Mesdames J. Johnson, S. G. Williams, and M. N- Kendall in charge, and the judging of the cooking competitions was dope by Mr J. iMules, of the Hauraki Bakery. His, awards were as follows :— Sponge, fancy: Mrs' J. Newman 1; sponge, without butter; Miss EWhite 1, Miss C. Hegh 2. Small cakes, assorted: Mrs W. Taylor 1 ; plain scones: Mrs A. Hegh 1, Mrs J. GMillejr 2. Bread : Mrs F. Burfoot 1Fancy scones : Mrs J. Newman 1, Mrs A. Hegh 2. . The sweets, stall was laden with home-made sweets, which Misses RWilliams, H. Spencer, I. McCormick and Mrs E. B. Hill served in dainty home-made in one .corner Mrs J; A. Walker collectel,d thei shillings, at the hoop-la tables, apd, l . Mesdames F. Loader and L- Gloodwin the children’s coins at the Liicky Dips.

Mrs Hunt and Miss O’Dlonnell, of were in charge of the drapery ancli fancy gpods stall. On the stage refreshmenits were, served throughout the afternoon and evening by an energetic band, including Mesdames J. Hamilton, W. Taylor, V. Lord, J. Wallace L. Hen wood, and I Misses Williams, Elvin, G. Hamilton, ' and D. Olsep. The bazaar was formally opened by ’ Mr A. >M. Samuel, M.P-, at 2 p.m. He was preceded by Mr W. Bongardl, Mayor of Thames, and Mi - W. J. Danby, chairman of the Thames Harbour Board. Both speakers wished t’lio; bazaar success, and spoke of the pleasure shown at the presence of Mi’ AM. Samuel, >M. P., who haul only ris.eir irom a sick bed three tour davs before, contrary to b.-is doctor's orders. Mr Samuel expressed hie pleasure at l)c;uig allowed to tahe part in a. bazaar for such an excellent causeHe was impressed with the obvious signs of great work by the org.ahisers of tlie bazaar anfi wished t'he sale great success. He would have pleasure in donating a guinea to the funds, and °f competing with his colleagues from Thames in- the various competitions. Numerous competitions were held, Mrs H. H.
