THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 1929. LOCAL AND GENERAL

• The s.s. Waipu and an oil vessel are relieving the s.s. Taniwha while she is undergoing annual survey and overhaul at Auckland. '

During the gale on Monday last the wharfshed on Johnstone’s wharf, Ngatea, was blown into the river. The wind caused interruption to telephone and electric power services, but otherwise little damage was done. The tide in the Piako River was the highest recorded for some time.

Ducks are reported to be comparatively scarce in the upper reaches of the Piako River this season. Up to the present there has been little water about,' but with the recent heavy rains, and the high tides on account of the northerly wind, the basin will probably fill up and ducks may arrive when disturbed elsewhere. The Northern Steam Ship Co.’s oil vessel Pono arrived at Paeroa on Saturday laden with Australian hardwood poles for the Thames Valley Electric Power Board. These poles were immediately transferred on to lighters and towed up the river to Te Aroha. Winter sports will comence on the Hauraki Plains on Saturday next, when the first matches in the interclub competitions under the control' of the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union and the Hauraki Plains Ladies’ Hockey Association will be played. Ngatea footballers will play at Turua and the Kerepeehi teams will meet Waitakaruru. The draw for hockey is as follows : Ngatea at School, Kopuarahi at Turua, Waitakaruru at Kerepeehi, Kerepeehi B at Kopuarahi B. Control of part of the foreshore at Tauranga has been invested in the Mount Maunganui Domain Board, a step that has been desired for a long time, and one that should be for the good of the town, improving as it will the beautiful seaside resort.
