Sir, —That the whole reason of a town’s existence is wrapped up in sport appears to be the contention of “Sport” in his letter to your esteemed paper. Surely there are few thinking persons who would endorse this. Adequate opportunities for the pursuit of sport exist in this country. What seems desirable is the easing of the burden of conducting business to those who are carrying heavy responsibilities in rates and taxation. There are many who believe a change to a mid-week halfholiday will help those so overburdened. VERITAS. Sir,—>ln your Monday’s issue your correspondent “Sport,” in referring to the pending ballot to decide the halfholiday, expresses concern regarding the outcome, fearing the effect on sport should the ratepayers change the weekly half-day. I am sure that any sport-loving person will agree with him that there is reason to be apprehensive should this measure be carried. Those who may be included in this category will readily recall the number of players who would be prevented from participating, and whose absence would make itself felt and be reflected in the lowered standard of play and in the consequent lessening of enthusiasm on the part of the general public. In this respect, at least, the town would receive a setback which would be most undesirable to those who seek its advancement, In company with “Sport” I suggest that the sporting bodies, through their executive officers, concentrate on this subject, while they have the chance to make theii’ activity of some practical use. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” has long been recognised as a great truth, and I am sure this need not be confined to individuals, being equally applicable to any community, Don’t let this become a dull town, JACK,
