To-morrow, Anzac Day, is New Zealand’s and Australia’s day, a day peculiarly their own, fought for and won by their sons. Every nation on earth has a national day in its calendar, a day set apart to honour' a patron saint, to celebrate independence, to commemorate some great battle ; a day set apart each year in memory of some event of outstanding significance in the country’s history. To the two young nations under the Southern Cross the day when their troops covered themselves with undying glory on the Gallipoli Peninsula stands out as an event of immense magnitude, and fittingly have the people decided to honour it. Anzac Day, far from being an occasion of national mourning, is in truth a day of national exaltation, of justifiable pride for what our men attained ; exaltation softened and rendered contrite and humble by the thought of those who fell in the cause of the Motherland and the whole vast British Commonwealth of Nations.
