BOROUGH WORKS.

OPERATIONS DURING MONTH. COMMITTEE’S REPORT. At the meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council held last night the following report by the Works Committee was read :— Maintenance. “This work has been carried out as usual. Special attention is being given to cleaning out open stormwater drains with a view to having all main public drains free of obstruction before winter rains set in. Observations have now proved that inside sluice gate! or check valves will be necessary on all storm discharge orifices in the borough, because it is always possible for the flap valves to get an obstruction undei’ them, which prevents them closing. The engineer of the Public Works Department has been approached on this matter, and it is 'intended to endeavour to have this work done. “Footpaths which were kerbed and channelled in connection with both approaches to the new river bridge have been asphalted, as also was the street in front of the fire station, and the path on the domain side of the building ; and the borough yard has been bituminised. “The 4ft culvert in Station Road has been extended for the full width of the street, and on the footpath side concreted and concrete posts and rails erected. This removes the last piece Of wooden bridge on any street or footpath in the borough. “About 50ft of stormwater’ drainpipes have also been laid into culvert. Water Main Reticulation. “Trenches have been opened in Rye Lane and Miller Avenue to Kennedy Street and some progress has been made with the laying of the 4-inch pipes. Septic Tank and Flood Pumping. “Tins installation has been completed and a trial run obtained. For the main purpose for which the plant was installed, namely, to keep sewage level down during flood time, the trial proved a complete success, the sewage pump having a proved capacity of 40,000 gallons per hour on a consumption of nine h.p. For the purpose of cleaning out the septic tank this pump is not perfect, as it is liable to be choked by rag ; but otherwise it handles the mat and sludge growth. “The tank was entirely cleaned out by two men .in three days, and the plant will do the work required under this purpose for some time. It would be wise, however, to obtain particulars for the cost •ptf a stereophagus pump, with a view to installing one at a later date if the population increases and finances permit. Flood Pump. “The pump installed on “appro” was giveri a trial run during recent rains and gave a discharge of approximately 70,000 gallons; This is a large quantity of water, but it is not sufficient. It is intended to increase the speed of the impeller and obtain further data to see if the quantity can be substantially increased, and a further report next month will be presented.”
