LOCAL AND GENERAL
As far as can be ascertained at the time of going to press, the following members of the Borough Council will seek re-election now that Mr W. Marshall has decided to accept re-nomina-tion to the office of Mayor : Crs. P. E. Brenan, E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt, H. J. Hare, and J. W. Silcock. This leaves three vacancies, for which, as yet, only one proposal has come forward. Mr Herman Bray, on being approached this morning, has consented to tsand, which still leaves two seats vacant. Prospective candidates and their nominators arc reminded that at noon on Friday is the time limit for acceptance of nominations. The whole of the present school committee, with the exception of Mr W. C. Alexander, who has decided not to stand again, have been re-nomin-ated for the coming term of office. Mr J. Brocket has been nominated for the vacancy. A De Havilland Moth, of the same type as that in which Hinkler made his famous record-breaking England-to-Australia flight, arrived in Paeroa yesterday morning from Te Aroha, piloted by Captain D. McGregor, D.F.C. and bar. The ’plane, which belongs to Hamilton Airways, Ltd., landed at the racecourse and had a busy day taking up passengers. Many local residents availed themselves of experiencing the thrills of an aeroplane flight, and of seeing their town from the air. During the course of the day one passenger was carried who took a series of moving pictures for private use, this being the first time on record pf an aerial “movie” being “shot” of Paeroa. The De Havilland will continue giving flights from the racecourse to-day, preparatory to leaving for Thames. As evidence that commercial flying of a type more serious than just the ordinary few minutes’ “flips” has been established in New Zealand is the fact that the owners of the aeroplane will arrange to carry passengers to and from any place in the Dominion.
