FOOTBALL.

PAEROA RUGBY UNION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union executive on Friday evening Mr J. Crosby was elected chairman of the union for the year. Mr W. Neil, who had proposed another member for the offiei, mentioned that he was, in 1896, one of the original four founders of the union, then known as the Ohinemuri Rugby Union, and although absent from Paeroa for some time he had returned and was keen to assist the union out of the hole it had got into. Mr J. Crosby, in thanking the meeting for electing him to the office of chairman, said that he had been interested in Rugby affairs for many years. He wished for the co-opera-tion of everyone, and emphasised his desire to further the affairs of the union. He favoured neighbouring teams coming in, as in his opinion it would be a benefit to the town and football generally.

Purchase of Footballs.

A letter was read Irom an Auckland firm quoting prices for footballs.

Messrs E. Shaw and W. Neil strongly advocated thart purchases be made locally, a contention agreed to by all present.

Grounds. Mr Crosby proposed reappointing the same groundsman as last year. Mr Shaw, in opposing, said that members of the union shout’d be prepared to do the necessary work themselves, as they were in the habit of doing before last year. The union had no funds, and should wipe out their liability before spending money on wages for a groundsman. Mr Walmsley spoke in sfonilar terms, and through there- being" no seconder Mr Crosby’s motion lapsed and it was decided that the other secretaries be written to asking their cooperation in the matter, and that members do the‘work themselves. Nerthertoh Club. Considerable discussion centred round Mr Crosby’s motion to write to the late Club’s secretary with a view" to an endeavoui’ to enable the club to field a team once more. The majority opinion was that the number of teams was better left as at present ; these clubs could augment their strength from Netherton players. The public wanted to see good football, and bettei- three good teams tham a number of inferior ones. Union Debt. Mr Walmsley put forward two suggestions for the liquidation of the union’s debt. One was a levy of 2s on each, member, and the other the issue of a ten-match admittance card for 8s as an added inducement to increase spectators and thereby gatemoney, Both schemes were gone into but were not adopted, in the end it being decided to communicate with each chib and ask them to aid in the matter. x Club Colours. . It was''arranged that the secretary ask the various clubs to send in their colours and list of players at the earliest opportunity. Insurance Scheme. The meeting agreed that the Auckland Rugby Union be written to concerning insurance matters. Election of Secretary. By unanimous agreement Mi’ W. Fathers was elected secretary to the union, Mr Walmsley kindly offering to assist him in every way until such time as he felt he was competent to act on his own. Mr Fathers thanked the members for their remarks with reference to him and assumed them that he would make the union’s interests his own.

Delegates.

Messrs W. Neil, E. Shaw, and J. Walmsley were appointed delegates to "the Thames Valley Rugby Union, while Mr Walmsley was also appointed delegate for the West club to the Paeroa Rugby Union.
