PIAKO ASSOCIATION FINAL. PAEROA AND MATAMATA MEET. An extremely interesting match, productive of. some excellent play, took place on the domain on Saturday, when- Paeroa, as winners of the Northern section of the Piako Cricket Association, met Matamata, the winners of the Southern section, in the 'first day’s play of a two-days match. Matamata going to the wickets first, scored 126, Hollis giving a fine exhibition in the scoring of his 56 ( runs. Murray’s 24 was well batted, while Ayers ca rried his bat for a good 12. Bowling for Paeroa, Howard was in his best form and averaged 3.8 runs for a wicket. Shand bowled well, but Ball, Dare, and Stack got pretty well knocked about. Stack, the first man in for Paeroa, indulged in solid stonewalling tactics, and did not seem to settle down to the bowling.- However, his score of 16 was well merited. Hbwdrd was unlucky in being caught before 'he had even got set. Merhrtens, in catching him low down on the ground, is to be congratulated. Knight’s nought was through his unfortunate habit of leg before the wicket. Wright at the wickets gave a performance of real batting which was a delight to witness, as though without the slightest effort, he sent the ball wherever ' he desired. Apparently prepared'for a century, through an unfortunate slight misjudgment on h,is part, his wicket fell. Wright’s 47 was perfect : ( cricket. Dare knocked up ,17, but did not seem too comfortable the ' whole time. Shand who was just get- . ting used to the bowling, and looking' as though he were about to score freely, was prevented owing to the failing light making it 'nee’essary to' appeal for stumps to be drawn on J that score. The opponents agreeing, the match was stopped at 5.15. It will be continued at Matamata on Saturday next. Following are the details :— ArA T; V AIA TA. —Fi rst In ni,ngs.
