THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto.: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 1929. MEAT FOR UNITED STATES ARMY.

A resident ctf Hawaii has -arriyeidi iu New Zealand with a view to inquiring into the market here, and later in Australia, for suppies of veal, beef, and! lamb to constitute, the 200,0001 b of meat a month consumed by the, United States Aimy in the Hawaiian Islands. It is, .sincerely to be hoped that tlie whole, or even a part, of the contract fa.lls to New Zealand, in face ol Australian and South American competition. On the question of. freights alone New Zealand has a decided advantage, being . nearer to Honolulu than Australia ayid those South American States which could supply in quantity meat of the dedesired quality. With that in her favour, and the indisputable quality of her lamb, the lamb part of the Cent! act should be assiduously, .sought after. And here, ten, is. the opportunity of a new market for our veal, this meat being greatly appreciated by the Americans. But interest .in American Army contracts need not cease with the. troops, stationed in Hawaii. There is a lar.g,e potential market consisting of t.he American army, navy, marines, and constabulary in the PhilHpines, far which units the commissariat department Concerned has been in the habit of importing meat from Sibqria and, China. Both these countries raise meat that is tough and more or less unpalatable, particularly to jaded, appetites cd the East. Investigations on New Zealand’s behalf in the Phiilipines might easily lead to a regular export trade to those islands, and in the neat future new markets must be found, especially in view of the proposed increased tariff against New Zealand lamb, etc., in the United States, a tariff that will affect the States itself, but not her territories.
